Hi Guys My new Maz 18 jr mk1 with a G12M cream back arrived today and I'm very impressed so far. Very happy to be part of the Dr Z family! However, when I stomp on my big muff pedals the bass is abit loose and lacking to my ears. Perhaps it is that I've always used V30s before. I was wondering what speakers folk prefer? Or are there any big muff / fuzz players who have a Maz 18 and have a fav speaker to go with it? Cheers David PS. Pic of my set up attached (hopefully) ibb.co/hP7i8e

I’ve had a 2012 Maz 18NR and I currently have a 2018 Maz 18 MKII Reverb. Both came with the stock G12H30 speaker. I’m not a Big Muff user, but I’m using a Boss JB2 (Blues Driver/Angry Charlie) with no issues.

I have found I like Greenbacks. My Maz Jr came with one. I settled on one in my Randall IsoCab after the V30 that it came with exhibited some nasty cone cry. At the same time, I'll tend to not go for too much bass. I probably do more recording than playing live, and I'm all about carving out the tone to fit the instruments in. Thus, I try to leave the bass area for the bass guitar and kick drum to fill. I sometimes hear a nice guitar that has that bottom OMPH! and Growl and think "YEA!".
I recently picked up a UA Ox. It's been fun to dial in different speakers. I've found the Creamback to be very similar to the Greenback, and I suppose it's suppose to be. I'm also realizing, we all like different things since some of the speakers don't work great for me. If they're in the Ox, they are there for a reason and people like them.
So, I agree to give the Creamback some time to dial in your sound. And, nothing is stopping you from changing it out. Have fun!

In my Maz 18NR combo ultralite cab, I've had really good luck with the WGS ET-65. But like's been said, rock the Creamback for a while. It's also a great speaker. I like the Z-12 better in the Nova, but the ET-65 in the Maz.
EDIT: The Nova is back to stock with the G12H30. I tried a bunch of speakers in the Nova. The Z-12 was cool but the H30 is better in the Nova...Doc's ears win again!

In my opinion it all depends on what kind of tone you’re after. The Maz is very versatile and the speaker used in it makes a big difference. More voxy tone: Alnico Gold, no question. More early Marshall sound: GB or Creamback M. More modern: V30. My 2 cents.

FWIW (but not exactly on point);
I have an open back 2x12 enclosure with an ET65 and G12c/s that I use with my Maz18nrMk2 when I need to move more air. These two WGS speakers seem to complement each other, at least to my ears.

Recent Celestion Gold convert here....LOVE THAT SPEAKER!!! I play dirty 90 percent of the time and it remains tight and clear! Came from a Tone Tubby 40/40 ceramic that was nice but the Gold just takes the amp to a whole new level.

I started out with the Creamback "M" for a year or two with my Mark1 Maz 18 with verb. Then went to a blue for a short time and ended with the Gold! I'm done switching cabs for my Maz. I like the cream back a lot, but the Gold or Blue is where it's at!

It all shows how dependent it all is on what we want from our amp/speaker. With my Maz I went from a V30 originally, to a Gold for several years, and then a Creamback M. For me the Gold sounded great for chimey cleans, but I grew tired of the kind of nasally character it gave when I used a drive pedal. The CB sounds more natural to me, and its lower efficiency means I can get more out of the amp.

sometimes people like that loose feel. It can give a 'about to loose control' feel & tone. I'd say give it some time, and who knows, you may get used to it....and actually come to like it.

I have the Cel Blue in the Maz and a Z cab, closed back with the G12H30, lows and highs and mids, complete.

I've used more speakers with my Maz than I can remember. Been using the WGS Reaper HP for a few months and like it a lot. Sounds more full than the Celestion 70th anniversary G12H30 and clearer than the Greenback clones.

After a month curiosity got the better of me and I swapped out the G12M CB for a V30. The low end is there with the V30 and to my ear I prefer the sound I get from it. I'll probably stick with the V30 for a few months and swap out for a blue or gold! I love to tinker Thanks for the replies! It's good to know other peoples views who have the same amp and play different styles of music.

I am running a V30 in my MKII and like it very much - more so than the Alnico Gold. Honestly, I am surprised. The V30 is very flexible, just like the amp is. I can go from country to high gain without issue. I feel the same way about the G12H-75 cream back (my personal favorite). I have an Alnico Gold and every time I have put it in one of my Mazs I end up taking it out. It sounds great when I am pretending to be Brad Paisley, but just doesn't cut it when I pretend to be Zakk Wylde. It is a great speaker, but not a "jack of all trades" in my experience.

FWIW... I got (RED) a Maz 18NR MK2 about a year ago. I settled on the Creamback, and liked it even more once it was broken in. I started running my Maz along side my Z Lux, and I started to think I didn't like the Creamback anymore. What I figured out is that the Z Lux just sounds so HUGE, that it made the Maz w/Creamback sound like it had a pillow over it, by comparison.
Still loving the Creamback with my Maz though.
ETA - I forgot to mention that my favorite part of the Creamback is using it for more dirty tones. To me, that's where it shines. I don't think the Creamback gives me the best cleans I've ever heard, but decent.
