I've recently been going down the cab and speaker rabbit hole (again) and wound up finding a great deal on a couple of used Bad Cat cabs. I bought them for the cab, figuring that I would have to immediately flip the Bad Cat proprietary V30 based speakers. I had read so much negative talk about V30s over the years that I had a pre-conceived notion that they would sound terrible for the moderate volume clean jazz and surf I play most of the time. I have not had the cabs that long but so far, I'm liking the speakers through my old Fenders, the Z-28, and the Therapy.
The blonde 2x12 cab is an older one (2003) which has true V30s which the Bad Cat folks apparently "tweaked" by removing the doping. The black 1x12 is a newer one and has their most recent Celestion which uses a V30 frame but is otherwise supposedly built differently from a V30. This speaker is really nice. The construction of the cabs is top notch, right up there with the Z cabs I have owned in the past.
Anyway, lesson learned about judging things before trying them. I may still go with my original plan and replace the proprietary V30 speakers but I won't be in any rush based on the first 10-20 hours of experience with these. I currently have the following cabs and speaker combos:
Black 1x12 Bad Cat open back with the newest proprietary speaker
2x12 home made open back pine cab with an alnico California and an alnico Tone Tubby. The cab is wired in stereo so each speaker can be played individually or in parallel with a jumper cord.
Blonde Bad Cat 2x12 with the first generation Bad Cat Proprietary V30s
Black Top Hat 2x12 with an Eminence Cannibis-Rex and a Cele Gold (my Acapulco Gold cab).
Except for the C-Rex + Gold combo, I'll probably wind up moving the others around to try and find that "perfect" combination of speaker and cab. That's the fun part.
