I'm thinking about putting a Strat together, and I know a lot of you have built more than a couple.
What is the best body wood, and do you want lightweight or heavy? Same with the neck, light or heavy? Or is how they match more important in overall tone? I've been leaning toward an alder body and a maple neck. Ideally I'd like it to be lightweight, but I don't want to sacrifice tone for it.
I want to use it for blues and rock; for a baseline I'd have to say I love BW's tone that he gets with his Strat and Maz. Buddy famously says "I'd probably sound the same on a Squire" in his song "Deadwood and Wire"...I still want a great sounding Strat. Do I have to go Fender Custom Shop or can I make one myself?
I'd really appreciate your experience on these, guys. Who supplies great, consistent parts?

Warmoth.com. I have several Warmoth necks and a couple Strat bodies and I have been very satisfied. As far as which wood and weight you need to determine that as that's a matter of opinion I'm sure. Warmoth lists the weight for each body before you order so you should be able to find exactly what you want. You can pick out specific pieces of wood so you can see the grain of the exact piece you are getting. My favorite body is their chambered Strat body that has some hidden hollow chambers in the body. It's light and really resonates. It's a dream to play. It's not for everybody I'm sure but I recommend you check that out. I am not affiliated with Warmoth in any way just a satisfied customer.

Howdy,
I like USA Custom Guitars out of Tacoma. I have a flamed Mahogany Tele that's fantastic. Bought the body and neck from them back in '03. Sounds great with DiMarzio Twang King pickups.

Whoever supplies Bill Nash these days is doing excellent work. I agree 100%. My Nash E-52 (Esquire) followed me home to the UK from Guitar Riot after Z-fest. Excellent guitar, plays and sounds great. Bill Nash definitely has a magic touch.

I have used Warmoth with great success.
I have a Musikraft super lightweight Strat body coming from MJT as we speak.

The mantra of your avatar shines brightly in this post. I have no experience in this realm, but I have often wanted to do the same. I hope you will document your progress in this project for the inexperienced like me. Good building.

Last year, I had my luthier make me a hollow body Strat with parts from AllParts, except for the pickups (DeTemple).
This was his preference; the guitar turned out quite well.

I dig the figuring in the body wood, what is it? mahogony back Bobinga top chambered body. contoured neck heel, Pao ferro neck, ebony fret board stainless steel frets. The pao ferro neck has no finish on it and doesn't need any- and is smooth all the time. Its light weight and plays amazing. ssh , wilkerson trem. Locking tuners. I just love this guitar and its the only guitar that has stayed b/c its my number 1--!
