I bought a Z-Lux head and it was delivered today. I tried it out through a Celestion Gold and thought it sounded really good. Later installed a Z 12" speaker... Great sound. First impressions ... Great amp.

Congrats! I love golds, I have them in my Remedy cab, but haven’t tried them with the Z-Lux yet. I bet it did sound great. In the last few weeks I’ve played a festival and been in the studio and it was great for both applications.

I also like mine better with the Z-12 over the Gold. It sounds huge.

I've been reading through the Z-Lux posts to get a better understanding of what others have found works best with the amp (pedals, speakers, settings, etc.). Although the Celestion Gold sounded good, I am testing at at fairly low volume - it may not sound so great at gig volume. For now, I'm going to stick with the Z 12" speaker for gigs, just because that seems to be the general consensus here. I may try the amp with a Z and a Celestion Gold at larger gigs to see how it sounds.
I was impressed with the sound of the amp using the boost pedal. Quite a bit different than the sound of my Maz 18nr with the boost.
Anyway I have a gig next Saturday and will be using the Z-LUX ... I will update after the Gig.

Fwiw, I generally have the (variable) boost on all the time, set a little less than halfway, at gigs. This is with single coil guitars. Bass is typically all the way down, as a result.

So I used the Z-Lux at a gig last night .,. It was great! I ended up running at 20 watts ... I'm still playing with pedals. I ended up using a clean boost for most solo work and it worked well... Also had good luck with the Gain Changer. I didn't use the Dr Z variable boost, but will try it out Friday at a gig along with a Z Brake.

... I didn't use the Dr Z variable boost, but will try it out Friday at a gig along with a Z Brake. Once I put the boost on at a gig I almost never switch it off even though I keep telling myself that I will :-). I have also found that I really like the tone of the amp on full power. The volume difference is only 3 dB, I’d give it a try too. I did spend my first year playing with it on half power thinking it would be too loud for gigs but it’s fine for the 150 seat pubs I play. Would be different if you’re trying to get all your dirt from the amp though.

I started experimenting with the variable boost at home will give it a try on a gig in the near future...Thanks for the tips! FWIW, I have been using mostly guitars with humbuckers. The other guitar player uses a strat and a Ghia, so I usually use a PRS DGT to give a bit of tonal variety.
