Been experimenting with Rangemaster clones with multiple Mullard germanium OC transistors. This simple and often overlooked circuit is quickly becoming my all time favorite “extra something” pedal. I haven’t decided which of the popular trannies I like best (OCs 44, 71, 76, 75) yet but am pretty sure I’ll like them all for different reasons. In front of a cranked amp with a couple of clicks on the Air Brake brings some of the most harmonic laden overdrive sounds I’ve ever heard from a pedal. I’m using it with my home brew, Fender derived circuits and love the results. Perfect with tweeds. Germanium seems to draw out more sparkle while retaining that rounded, amp like feel. Different from FETs and OPAMPS for sure. Haven’t tried it with my Z’s yet, but don’t expect there to be as dramatic a result - they already have all of the harmonics and sparkle incorporated into the front end by design.

If you haven't had a chance to try the Rory Gallagher Hawk you should try it. It is supposed to be exact circuit of the Rangemaster Rory used - great tones!

I like the Rangemaster circuit, but the clones I have tried are problematic for me. Way too much volume gain the way I usually employ pedals. I do have a Time Machine Boost which has a Rangemaster circuit that I can use... ME

Ran one today with an OC43. These things absolutely scream through a cranked tweed!
