Bought a 1st year Gibson es-339 in mint condition @ a great price off of Reverb. So mint, I don't think it was ever played! No fret wear, & needed a setup. After filing the e & e nut slots until there was .024, & .010 between fret top & string underside I filed the in between string slots. Laying a 12" radius gauge over the 1st fret, using the thinnest feeler gauge between the underside of the radius gauge & top of strings, I pulled the strings out one @ a time & filed. Pretty good, onto the bridge saddles. I always believed because the bridge is already @ radius, the saddles just needed enough notch to hold the strings. I put the radius gauge over the strings @ the front of the bridge pickup. String height was all over the place. I filed the bridge saddle slots to radius, what a difference. Plays great! Btw, a cheap set of torch tip cleaners make great files. Been playing & tinkering for 40 years, still finding stuff out. Cheers...

Sounds cool. Any pics of your new guitar? Paul, if I can figure out how to load (naturally, the kids will be helping), I will post it. It's the light caramel burst, w/ the ginormous neck. $1350. shipped! The neck is literally like a classical, love it, bigger than my 2000 lp. custom.

Thanks im going to check them out...do you suggest a specific brand/sized ?....they look like they would work sweet... Made by a company called WYPO. They are cleaners for torch tips. It's a set of 11 in different sizes, they are metal, round, & knurled, like for abrasive filing/ cleaning. They come in a small folding metal box, real inexpensive too. You can use them for guns, crafts, really anything. They're perfect for guitar nuts, & bridge saddles.

Just got a set today based on your recommendation. Great idea and will save wear and tear on nut files for sure!

I used them for cleaning out and polishing nut slots before I broke down and bought a set of proper files.

Exactly. Poor man's compromise, but they do work on lots of things, nice to have around. The right tool for the job is the best way to go, especially when working on your expensive guitars!
