and picked up a used Galaxie on the 'bay. Last fall I got a Maz18NR, and now this? I'll only keep one but they were pretty close in price and since I bought used, I should get almost all of my money back on whichever one I end up selling.
But for a little while I'll play with both and really take the time to check out the similaritys and differences. The Maz is great, but I want more headroom and I've always been a fan of Fenders, so the pair of 6l6's are something I can relate to! (I really like 6v6's but the headroom/volume thing again...)
What speakers you guys use? I got the head and will be able to run a C. Rex which I know will sound great, I used that speaker with the Maz, a 5e3, and a DRRI. But if I end up keeping the Galaxie I'll use my 2-10 cab which is currently at 4 ohms so I'll have to replace the speakers. What 10's are recommended for this amp? I'll be wanting a higher rating so I don't get much speaker break up.
Man, I can't wait for the upcoming long weekend!!

Hey Congrats. You must have gotten the blonde one that was up yesterday on ebay - nice price too!! Anyway, I'd recommend an open back cab, and w/ greenbacks if using 12" speakers(or the G12-65 that comes in the 1x12 combo). Great amp.

Yeah, I saw it this morning and grabbed it. I was thinking about a Maz38 but then I looked into the Galaxie and the specs seemed more right for me. Quite the impulse buy for a Monday morning! I think this one may work better than the Maz18 for the band I'm in - blues and soul need to go through a pair of stout 6L6's!
What I fear is I'll like it and the Maz equally...I can keep both for a little while to do a serious evaluation, but after a few weeks one of them will have to go.

Congrats. I have both Maz Sr and Galaxie...I end up keeping both amps. The new 2x10 convertible cab is great with Galaxie.

I use an older model 2x10 with mine and love it. Probably what I love about the Galaxie and the 6L6s is that they don't seem to have the touch of harsh/brittleness that the EL84s have. I mean loved my Maz Jr (8th one built) so much that I sold it to the other guitar player in our band so he could have a real amp. I also picked up a used Carmen Ghia 2x10 combo the other day cause I needed another 2x10 cab for festival season and hey why not a combo (?) and gigged it the other night. This was a 2nd time around with a Ghia and while I love it (hey guitar, cord, amp) it still didn't have that big round sound of the 6L6s. Definitely use an Airbrake unless you are playing huge rooms or outdoors. Of course I love all the Z's I have owned and played.

The Galaxie showed up last night (yes, FedEx dropped it off sometime between 7-9 PM!?! - thanks ubertone!) WOW! I thought the Maz18 was great but this amp kills!! Can't wait for band practice Tuesday so I can really here what it sounds like. I'm hearing a lot of tweed in there which is what I like, and the power should allow me to keep it cleanish at band volume which is what I'm looking for. The T/B/P tone stack and no MV works for me, I'm used to older fenders with no middle or master so I dialed it in pretty quickly. Sound like it should with my Tele, very late 50's/early 60's and my McInturff simlply sounds fat. As for speakers, the C. Rex sounds great with it, I'll stick with that for a while in an old open backed cab. I'll have to upgrade that sometime so I can have a matching blondes (is that shallow?).
I think this will be the keeper, there may be a Maz18NR & 2-10 cabinet up for sale soon...

Here's your review kidmagic - it totally rocks! Used it at practice yesterday and can definitely say the louder it goes, the better it sounds. Had Vol1 around 11:00 and the Vol2 around 9:30. I didn't like Vol2 at home - too loud and gainy, but with the band I used it for solos instead of my OD/Boost pedal (NOC3 Firefly, which is excellent BTW) and it was fat and toneful, very Carlton sounding with my McInturff (the amp, not my playing...). Definitely like this one better than the Maz18 - and I really like that amp, it just doesn't fit my bluesy style as well.
The good news is that the bass player we were trying out was great, knew the songs and will keep playing with us, so I'll be gigging with the Galaxie soon!
