Disclaimer: Ignore my avatar!
My birthday's coming up next week and now that I'm all alone here in MI, I decided to get myself a nice new guitar. I was going to buy a vintage partscaster ('58 Strat body, '62 Jazzmaster neck) but the deal fell through. The deal was all set and the guy's wife said "no." And after thinking about it, I'm glad. I'd have had buyer's remorse, and my buddy would have had seller's remorse.
I've always wanted a nice Explorer and if not now, when? Natural Mahogany finish w/white pickguard, 2018 model. Burstbucker 2 in the neck, and Burstbucker 3 in the bridge. Torrefied Granadillo fingerboard (it's said to be Mexican rosewood?). It'll be coming in to my local GC this week, and the manager who's a friend said no sweat if I didn't like that particular one. I'm excited, I have always loved the Explorer vibe.

Dave, for some reason I’m relieved that the partscaster deal fell through. Sounds like a lot of dough for something like that. And then if the guys wife got involved in the deal, eeesch. Better to let that one lay. As for the Explorer, now that’s cool! Pics when you can please. Cheers!

One of the few guitars I wished I had back. I got one in Cheyenne, WY in '77. Some guy had special ordered one of the '76's and it took too long to come in so he bought another guitar. It was sitting there for a while so I got a good deal and got rid of an awful 3 bolt Stratocaster. Unfortunately after I started a band with a girl who's last lead guitar player played an Explorer I thought I should get rid of it. It was a great guitar. Nice big neck and great feel for playing sitting down. Good luck!

It came in today in a factory sealed box (first ever for me) and I got it for a terrific price: $1249, with a nice hardshell case. Plays and sounds great, I just had to lower the bridge a bit. It weighs right at 8 pounds, the same as my 'Bird. I seriously doubt if it's going to bump my Firebird out of her #1 spot but it sure will be getting a lot of attention in the next few weeks. The Burstbucker II in the neck and III in the bridge rock but clean up really well too. It can sound really sweet or it'll get downright aggressive too. I haven't even pulled the protective plastic off the pickguard and access cover on the back yet. Love it!

Congrats Dave !
Explorer, eh? Oddly enough that was one of the first guitars I ever wanted. Back in the early 80s there was an Explorer run that were painted with the Union Jack. A shop in a town about an hour from me had one and I wanted to buy it but never did. I'd like to walk into a shop today and see that same guitar 😎
Hope you you are working on your U2 set list !
p.s. Always loved the headstock, too.

Nice. I almost jumped on a black Explorer Custom a while ago. How is the neck? Is it beefy or slim?

August 27th: I THINK I NEED an Explorer. August 28th: Never mind, I just bought it. The older we get and the more cash we have, the faster G.A.S works. Congratulations!

Nice. I almost jumped on a black Explorer Custom a while ago. How is the neck? Is it beefy or slim? Gibson calls the neck a "Slim Taper" shape. It's not puny, not like a baseball bat either. It's nice, much like my Firebird. It feels substantial and there's plenty of room for my fingers (I've got pretty big hands). It's a comfortable good playing neck, right in my wheelhouse. I wouldn't want it any smaller, but much bigger wouldn't work either.

Dave... congrats. between the Explorer and the Firebird, you can cop most of the licks Allen Collins ever played.
