At the risk of exposing my complete ignorance and idiocy what is the meaning of the "EZG" in the name? I'm assuming the 50 is 50 watts.

EZG is a Vulcan analogical anagram for the term Enmo Zeri Goont....
Translated, it means:
"a custom guitar amplifier that sounds exactly like a 1964 Fender Twin Reverb, but with better reverb!"

It was named after Dr Z's grandson Evan who was born around the time the amp was launched.
Most of the early Z amp are named after family members.
Carmen Ghia after his oldest grandson Carmen
SRZ 65 named after his daughter Sheree
JAZ 20/40 after his father John
MAZ 18 after himself

Oh my, I forgot my manners.....Welcome to the forum, friend! Thanks! I'm very excited to be joining the Dr. Z community. I should receive my first Dr. Z amp this Thursday. It's a black and black EZG-50 head. I don't know what year it is so don't know if it has the bass mod or not.

Awesome, thanks! Hey another thing I've been thinking about is whether the list of recommended tubes and bias point from the Dr. Z website would be accurate regardless of age of the amp? I'm thinking since this is a used amp with unknown (to me) history I might start out with a fresh set of tubes, keeping the ones currently in it for spares. From drzamps.com/support/tube-info/V1: 12AX7, V2: NOS 12AT7/6201, V3: 12AX7, V4: NOS 12AT7/6201, V5/6: Tung Sol 6L6GC STR(matched pair), V7: 5AR4 Recommended Bias Point: 28mA

You'll be good if you use the info from the web page. I've got one without the mod - not a big deal really. A great amp! Congrats

Welcome to the forum. As Mike said lots of good info and folk. I just learned something new via Todd's answer to this post. Plus I learned Vulcan from Lee. Two birds one stone.

You're gonna like that one, brother! GREAT amp! The bass mod is a very simple one.... I was looking at 1960's Super Reverbs and decided to go with this Dr. Z EZG-50 for reliability and probably even improvement over the original Fender. I like the flexibility of being a head plus the 4, 8 and 16 ohm speaker support, more reverb control and the two volumes. Looking forward to this. I would like a matching Dr. Z 4x10 cab but can't fine one for sale anyplace. I would prefer black and tan or just black and black. Seems to be a shortage.

Here's one on Reverb with a road case. reverb.com/item/11657560-used-dr-z-4x10-open-back-cabinet-w-calzone-ata-roadcaseIf you can, also try it with a 1x15. SRV set-up.

Go to the Buy, Sell, and Trade (BST) section of this forum ( ztalk.proboards.com/board/3/buy-sell-trade ), and make a "WTB" (want to buy) post for a black 4x10 cab. It's free and commonly productive! Might want to read the rules on a sticky in that section too! Good luck!

Next (obvious) question: how many posts/Z amps do we need before we are considered part of the family- you know, and have amps named after us?
Enquiring minds want to know this stuff.
