I'm been looking at guitars, as usual, and I started looking at the EC strats. I noticed that the production model is $1600 while the Custom Shop version is $4500! Now I have a couple of Custom Shop Tele's ('63s) and I love them. But, I only paid about $2000 each for them back in the early 2000s. Do you think that the Custom Shop EC is really $2900 better than the product model? I do believe the CS models are better, but $2900 better? Thoughts?

Simple answers to simple questions: No--they're not $2900 better.

Don't get me wrong--I've owned five or six Fender CS guitars and I love them--still got a couple. But the current prices are crazy.

I hear you! I agree that the CS prices have gotten way out of hand!

Russell,
I have both versions. Each purchased used quite a few years ago at substantially below today's street prices for new. (I think the CS one was $1900 with shipping.) The CS has a nicer grain on the neck, and is finished a little better, but they're quite close sonically. Not worth the huge price gap, imo.

Mike,
I didn't know you had both versions. I knew you had at least one EC strat. $1900 for a CS version is good. That reminds me of my CS Teles.

My EC Custom Shop Stratocaster is my favorite guitar. But, I bought it new in 2012 for $2,795 before the price increase. I had an artist model first that I bought used for $1,100, and it was fine, but the CS model is special.
So ... would I buy another CS model? Absolutely.

I would probably buy a CS Clapton for $2800 - $3000. But, I just don't think I can get to $4500!

I love Strats. I really do. I dig me some EC songs and his guitars are nice too. Not so keen on the price of the CS models ... but if it speaks to you and has all that you are looking for in a guitar, and the $$$ aint an issue ..... then have at it My past acquaintances have included: a '57 ri MIA; a couple of blue paisley MIJ; several HWY 1 models; a hard-tail MIA from the late 90s; a coupla parts-o-casters; and various Schecter/G&L and other variants ..... My current player is a late 90s MIJ '62 loaded with Lollars and some hardware swapped by the previous owner ..... a true bargain, and an absolute blast to play - even when I'm playin' it Back to the original question? I'm not sure I'd spend the current brand new price on any of the EC collection ..... but if I saw a used one at a good price, then sure thing cheers always, Joel
