A while back I bought one of those Deusenberg Les Trem setups to try on my Les Paul. It's a very small Bigsby inspired setup that mounts to the stop tail studs. When I did it the first time it wasn't very successful. The break angle over the tune-o-matic was so dramatic the bridge itself would rock when you used the tremolo. It did seem to be a cool unit. I could see incorporating it into a custom guitar especially if you located it further away from the bridge. A couple weeks ago I was blown away by how Laur Joametts was using one that was on his Fano when he was playing with Drivin' N' Cryin'. I talked to Laur and he said you have to use the supplied washers to raise the unit a little. So I decided to take another swing at the Deusenberg Les Trem yesterday. This time I incorporated an Allparts tune-o-matic style roller bridge and the D-berg supplied washers underneath the tremolo itself as advised by Laur. I still think using this tremolo on a Gibson with the existing bridge to stud measurements puts the tremolo a little too close to your right hand but it does work ten times better with this setup. Break angle better. No bridge rocking either.

The 'rub' is the whole housing is so close to the bridge it can mess with your right hand positioning....palm muting and stuff like that.

That looks like a nicely engineered piece. Roscoe, have you ever looked at stetsbar? They guy that makes them lives around the corner from me. It's an interesting design that makes the bridge/stop tail one piece and it slides as a unit on bearings. stetsbar.com

That said, it looks mighty heavy. Heavy is not usually what I'm looking to do.

I'm really lucky to have this regular monthly sideman gig. It's really good for trying stuff out.
So this Deusenberg Tremolo is mounted the way it's recommended on the guitar and working just fine.
ON THE GIG: total fail. Totally interfered with my right hand position and technique. Again I'll say it's a great unit if you could mount it at least 3 inches from the bridge but as a bolt on thing to use on any Gibson guitar I'd never recommend it. Too bad. Seemed very promising.

I held onto this tremolo and it's actually being used by Chris Swope in one of his www.swopeguitars.com/blog/introducing-the-biscayne-preorder-yours-now/ model guitars. Below is a drawing of 3 spacing ideas on where to place the unit so it would be more out of the way of my right hand. Guitar is close to being finished. We went with the center option.

Recently jumped on a great deal on my first Les Paul. I was really thinking about one of these because I had been saving for a Duesenburg. As I've been playing I realized that I love the bridge set up and really like how easy it is to rest my hand behind the bridge and roll it in for soft muting. As I got into that I let go of the idea of the Les Trem because it looks like it would get in the way. Thanks for sharing your experience to confirm my fear.
