Simple Question: what is your favorite Overdrive in combination with a Strat? I think for me it is the KOT.

I have a POT purchased in haste amongst all the hype but haven't really bonded with it. For thick strat tones l like my Way Huge Green Rhino. It's no slouch with buckers either. I also have an old Marshall drive master which l also like with a strat.

I use a Gain Changer for most stuff and especially with position 2 (middle+bridge). I can get a nice fusion kinda sound and other general good solo tones. For clean boost (like on the neck) I use a Timmy. And finally, for the smooth rock anthem stuff I use a Plimsoul. (Maz Jr)

I do like the Gain Changer by Barber.. now using the limited "SR" version but I still switch to the slight-mid-bump position when using a Strat. Call me crazy, but the good ol' TS9 still works well with a Strat, too... again, probably because of the mid-hump. There's a reason it was so popular!

I set my amp pretty clean and use 2 levels of drive. If I'm using the Cure, I use the EQ bypass as the first gain stage, then for solo's I top it off with a J Rockett Rockaway. If I'm not using the Cure I substitute a Keeley mod Blues Driver for the first OD stage.
If I'm using a guitar with humbuggies I generally can get enough OD from the first level and rarely use the Rockaway.

Fulltone Fulldrive and Plimsoul. Covers the entire OD waterfront for me.

Always on Timmy into RC boost works for me...

Depends on mood but usually if it needs hair I throw on either an OCD or stack the 2B boost into the Ep Boost. Sometimes it's the RC Boost V2 alone. I like the amp to have the grit and throw audible gas on it with the boost pedals.

I also find the Gain Changer to work well with Strat's.Granted,my Strat is a G&L S-500,but the GC with a Therapy amp is really enjoyable with Fendery single coils.

Keeley-modified VoodooLab Sparkledrive for the low gain stuff
Fulltone Plimsoul for the high gain stuff

For me.... when I had a strat, I loved the TS808. I also like the older Fulltone 70s fuzz. I would crank the amp to where it was getting a bit dirty and go from there.

1. Happiest right now with the Xotic Soul Driven. It goes from fairly subtle to fairly overdriven and retains a lot of the core sound and personality. This pedal has been sitting in front of my Route 66 nearly since I acquired the amp. It has a slightly dark and viscous tone- and even though that amp favors humbuckers a bit, the combination of amp and pedal really works with a strat.
2. Leaping to #2 with a bullet is the JHS AT pedal, which has several very in-your-face heavy distortion tones. I haven't explored the lighter side of the pedal (just got it.)
3. Xotic SH version of the RC. I just haven't had a lot of time with this one, but it's obviously pretty great.
4. Walrus Messner: haven't explored this very deeply but it seems pretty good on the lighter side.
5. Friedman BE-OD: plus: sounds like a Marshall, minus: sounds like a Marshall.
Aside from the Koda, which I haven't fully evaluated yet, those are, I think, all of my OD pedals. If I have an attenuator, any of them could do just fine- even as the only OD pedal on the board.
I have been messing around with fuzzes recently, too. Most notably, the Fredric Pocket Weasel- it has a notch filter mode that sounds a lot like my old Systech (think of Zappa's "Cosmic Debris" guitar sound.) Not for everything or everybody, but it's fun. The Fig Fumb has more uses and has a great tone, but so does the Death By Audio Apocalypse, though it has some issues with levels between modes (it has one great mode- others are less amazing.)

Forgot to mention. A Klon always sounds good regardless of guitar and amp.

I found a Klon Klone and Barber Gain Charger sound great with my Strat.

Jetter GS-124 for OD, Wampler Velvet Fuzz for heavier tones. BUT--the TC Electronics Mojomojo is a killer OD pedal--great tone and feel, and you could buy five of 'em for what the Jetter costs.

Thanks a lot for all your interesting ideas! I must admit, after a bit more testing I have to reconsider my own choice... the Wampler Tumnus beats the KOT. ;-)

On the fuzz side the katzenkonig is fun. I personally enjoy the strat with the boost kicked on halfway up with the maz jr. I like the POT or the WH saucy box, as well.
The messner is a great dirty boost. Less midhump than a tube screamer, but not a lot of drive either. It’s nice for goosing a dirty amp further.

An Xotic SL Drive into a Xotic EP Booster is my favorite recipe.

An Xotic SL Drive into a Xotic EP Booster is my favorite recipe. This. Though, I also have a BB Preamp and Wampler Tumnus on my board, and for solos (Maz 18 NR) for me nothing beats SL + EP + Tumnus.

Lately I have went back to my old red Keeley Fuzz Head into a Keeley Super PHAT mod. That Fuzz Head really thickens things up for saucy leads with the PHAT mod on.
