So...you have two to choose from and I've only ever mic'd the Gold with a SM-57 on-axis, off-cone near the edge. Thoughts on which speaker you prefer and where you mic it?
Cheers! Dave

I go with a greenback and do the 45 degree angle off-axis pointed towards the center with an SM-57. I recently messed with some Celestion Impulse Responses and found I settled on a closed back greenback cab (although the Gold was kind of nice too). They provide six mic positions from bright, thin, balanced, dark, dark2, and fat. I ended up at dark2 across the greenback and a few other cabinets although the 'fat' sounded nice. That got me to thinking whether my tone settings affect the speaker choice and mic position. Do I run my amp with a lot of treble when I record and then compensate with a darker mic position?

I do the same with the 45 degree angle except I use an EV PL35 mic (I used to use a 57 and liked it). I play a Cure amp, so I can't make a recommendation as to which of the 2 speakers to mic, but if you have IEM's you can really hear the difference in mic/speaker placement if you do some experimenting.

Dang! I had a feeling there was more to this question than mic'ing. So, I checked which space we were in and realized it was Z Wreck. I suppose that's one downfall of using the "Recent Thread" option too much.
I don't have the amp, but I did just sleep at a Holiday Inn Express. Actually, no, but my recent Celestion IR downloads included Blue and Gold 2x12 open back cabinets.
I'm guessing this depends on your preference. If you like a little more bite, the Blue has a little more top end. The Gold has a little rounder sound with a little more complexity. The Blue is more straightforward if my IRs are to be believed.
I don't know if you're asking for recording or live, but when looking up Celestion's mic positions, I noticed they provide a rear SM57 for their open cabs and suggest you mix it with a front SM57 for a fuller sound. Wow! If you have a second mic, give that a try. I've got it about 5.5 dB down from the front mic. It is as a described: A really nice full side. Who knew? (Professionals I suppose.)

Thank you for the input and yes, this is a live situation I'm describing. Loud and proud!
I'm finding the gold does have a bit more "umph" and I tend to drop the 57 on it 9/10 times. I need to experiment with some off-axis placement to see if that buys anything...may a video or two as a starting point as most gigs are set/sound-check/play with little time for experimentation <sigh> We're supposed to be starting on the next LP soon so I'll cloud the equation with 2-3 more amps and a couple more cabs....variety is the spice they say!
Cheers! Dave
