Witch amp on the market is the most similar to the Z28 ? I've thinked at the Deluxe Reverb for the 6v6 configuration. Actually my Z28 head come with a 2x12 with Weber's alnico blue dog and alnico silver bell. I'm looking for a combo for small clubs. I already have a Marshall 1974x that I'm thinking of trade for something else, maybe with more headroom. Thanks

Dr. Z's newer Cure combo amp would be a fantastic replacement for the Z28 in small clubs. It only comes one way--in a compact 1x12 combo--and I think the EQ could be adjusted so that it's pretty close to the Z28. (The Cure is a very versatile little combo.)

The preamp is different between the '28 & the Cure but I'd agree the Cure is the closest thing to the '28 without the punch of the EF86. The Cure also has more gain on tap w the level and EQ bypass options. I think the '28 is more muscular tone wise than the Deluxe Reverb. It definitely stays cleaner at higher volume levels than the DR which gets creamy at 4.

I would definitely say that the Route 66 is a "more powerful" alternative to the Z-28, considering that its preamp tone/bass work in a very similar fashion. I would think that the E.M.S. could also be a viable higher-powered alternative to the Z-28, as well.

I was going to mention the Therapy but I don't think either the Therapy or the 66 were ever offered in a combo format. The Z-28 is nothing like a DR IMO (and I like DRs). What about a Z-28 combo?? Empty combo cabs that fit the small format chassis pop up for sale every now and then or you could have one built (Mather?).
