Looking at pickup on of these guys. I currently have a Stang Ray and a RX Junior, both of which I love. I’m not a country player really, I actually play Les Pauls and PRS Singlecuts with pretty hefty amounts of drive. Never would’ve thought two amps designed for Brad Paisley would be my favorites. The DB4 caught my interest because it’s another Brad/Z design, but it sounds like it’s super thick.
The Z28 sounds pretty interesting to me too with it’s EF86 front end.
So, what do you dudes think? For reference I’ll be looking at heads and the cab I’ll use is a Z Best with a G12H30 and Greenback. I also use some dirt boxes and fuzz. King of Tone Timmy JHS Moonshine mojo Hand Crosstown fuzz

I obviously love the Z28. But if I had DB4 money, i may wanna go that route. Both amps are discontinued, but they made far more Z28s for a much longer time period. The Z28 will be easier and cheaper to get your hands on, now and in the future.
But the Z28 is a STELLAR amp. The only amp I've sold, missed so bad and bought another one! You literally can't go wrong with either.

Pickup a Z28 to see if ya like the 6V6 tubes and go from there. Pretty inexpensive to try and flip if needed. Cranking the tone knobs can help ya get some heavy sounds.

I don't have a DB4 but I can say that the Z-28 takes pedals like a champ and it sounds huge when cranked.

MarkT told me he felt the DB4 was darker than the '28. I've never owned the DB4 but like previous posts I've owned the '28 twice and loved it both times. Still have my second one.

I just ordered a z28 Head today through Humbucker music. I also own the Db4 head. I’ll be playing them through 2 dr.z cabs (1x12 & 2x10). I’ll let you know my thoughts in a few days when it arrives.

Since the OP stated he was after hefty amounts of drive the Db4 would probably get my vote for that. It has a lot more volume on tap, the high/low inputs, plus the half power switch 18/36 Watts. I found that I liked the Db4 best with a Creamback over the 2x10 but I don’t really play heavy rock the majority of the time. Doc loves it with the gold/Blue. It sounds glorious with Reverb, Delay, and Fuzz pedals. Also to note the Db4 is a very well rounded amp in terms of highs/mids/lows. . The z28 has a great booming low end and articulation. It did seem to break up much sooner than the db4 so I’m probably going to look into swapping over to the 5851 or 12AT7 on the phase inverter. I haven’t had a lot of time to spend on the z28 so I would say the first notable characteristics that stood out were again, the huge bottom end and the beautiful note articulation. Sorry, I know it’s not the best review of the z28 but I’ve only played through it for about 15-20 minutes If anyone is interested in trading a black cab for this blonde one please let me know.
