My friend's PV classic 30 recently died via an open transformer fuse, a PV exclusive feature of suck, that is built in that line of amps. I've offered to provide him an amp for next weekend's show we're doing together. That brings me to the question which Z do I let him use? Background-he plays LOUD most of the time and usually ran his former amp thru the PA via the FX loop out in addition to stage volume. I can either allow him to use the 2/10 '28 combo or the single Gold ten equipped Ghia. Interested to see how you guys vote.

So, you’d play one and he’d play the other? I think I’d give him the Ghia and I’d play the 28.

I'm with Jon. The Ghia would be closer in tone/feel to his Classic 30, so give him that; then you can have the Z28 and you shouldn't have trouble with him being louder than you.

If you let him use the Ghia, be sure to install and set the Suck pedal on “stun” before he fires up (a) so he’ll be comfortable with the tone, and (b) or you may never see your Ghia again.😁

We'll see. Thanks for the votes, gents.

I’d really like to try the Ghia. I have a fender pro jr and, seriously, it may be the most underrated amp ever made. For pure grind it’s hard to beat - you push it to the max and mic it, and I swear people come up and ask where the Marshall stack is.
Seems the Ghia would be very similar, but with more guts (my view of Z amps generally).

Having owned both a Pro Jr & 2 Ghias I'd say you're in the neighborhood but the Ghia is more articulate and more importantly for me, stays clean longer. I don't mean headroom alone. The PJ I had for 5 years w a blues band was great for grab and go grind but after the first set it was so squishy there was no headroom left even w single coils. The Ghia on the other hand runs great all night long and has a wonderful clean w hair thing going on that never loses definition or sparkle. Additionally the Ghia 1/10 sounds bigger than the boxy PJ I believe due to the voicing of the amp and the cabinet materials. The last difference between the two is the tone knob on the Fender is a treble cut whereas the Ghia is a baxandall style EQ which allows you to tailor the tone more fat or skinny than darker or brighter.

Good description. I really never used the PJ for clean tones - it was set for full overdrive in a 2 amp set up, and was great in that role. I really do think it may be fender’s “sleeper” amp for a small box that can roar.

As stated above, the Ghia will be closer to the classic 30, but it will not be nearly as loud as the Z-28. However, if the option to pump him through the monitors is available, let him use the Ghia. (and when I say 'pump him through the monitors'...I mean ONLY HIS monitor)
"...exclusive feature of suck." ....I'm gonna write that one down!

Update: my buddy bought the replacement transformer for me to install but picked up a Boss Katana SS amp for gigging. That means I can take the '28 2/10 and rock the snot out of it Friday night. Even through the PA the '28 would hang.
