It's a really interesting critter--basically a thinline acoustic electric designed expressly to run through an amp or PA. Three pickups (acoustic top sensor, under fretboard humbucker, bridge humbucker), tone and volume controls, skinny neck, jumbo frets. Pretty decent "acoustic" tones, especially on big open chords, which is maybe what they really focused on in thinking about acoustic tone, but plays like an electric, basically, and has a 5-way switch so you can flip to clean, jazzy tones or even run through a dirty amp, etc. What I want it for is basically rocking out while sounding acoustic, and I think it's going to work out just fine for that. It's a pretty impressive, bit of hybrid guitar engineering--very thoughtfully done. I still prefer the sound of my amplified D-41, of course, but the T5z is more than good enough for the kinds of "acoustic" gigs (with bass, drums and vocalist) we've got lined up. I think it's a winner. Pics here shortly.

Won't wear your fingers and hands out either. It will take a bit of learning how to balance the tone controls with the body sensor but once you do it will provide a very good amplified acoustic tone. As is typical with most Taylors lighter strumming and pick attack will yield better results. Congratulations!

Thanks! Yeah--it's not a guitar for heavy-handed thwanging, for sure. Fortunately there's not much call for that in our current setlist.

And yeah--I think tomorrow I'll have time to listen to it side by side with my Martin and see if I can't get a mix that approximates that amplified tone.

Howdy,
Congrats on your new Taylor. I test-drove one of these fine guitars several years ago. It played and sounded fantastic; a true Swiss army knife of a guitar.

Question for you - can you get a good jazzy tone out of it?

The demos indicate that you can--I haven't really tried to do much beyond the acoustic thing.

Intersting developmemt—I’ve been thinking about trading/selling the T5Z, but a couple nights ago at band practice my Martin was feeding back like crazy and rather than taking practice time hunting down the rogue frequency and squelching it, I switched to the T5Z, tweaked the EQ on my DI box slightly, and away we went. It sounded great—I’m getting used to its not-quite=but=almost acoustic tone, and at times it does things sonically that are kind of unique that I really like. So, T5Z to the rescue is what I’m saying—I think I’ll hang onto her for a while yet.
