I might be opening myself up for controversy and ridicule, but without taking anything away from Gary, I believe BW said a whole lot more on that tune. Buddy never ceases to bring me something new for the ear. So tasteful. Thanks for posting that.

Great post Mike! I found this a while back on Youtube. Great playing and tone all around!
My dream concert: BW and the BB's sharing the stage with JW and the Eagles!

Totally agree BW playing was much more sophisticated and matched the entire song. I found Gary's tone awful for the song style
then too much look at me playing....

I found Gary's tone awful for the song style But it's Gary's signature tone. So he's pretty much going to play that a LOT. When I'm in the mood for flashy Marshally Les Paul bluesy tones...I do like to listen to Gary Moore. But I can't stand to watch him play. His technique is...how do I gently say this....what I would have considered 'limiting' when I was younger. (Limited use of 4th finger, and some other stuff) He obviously is not limited by it...but I would have been!

Gary Moore was great. There's no argument there, the man could smoke that fretboard. But Buddy just has more soul in my humble opinion; he pulls out the unexpected and leaves me going, "Wait, what just happened?" A stage full of great talent for sure. Thanks for the post, Mike!

I agree. No disrespect to Gary, but I felt like he was running to catch up after BW's excellent solo. And as good as it was,I have seen clips of BW playing waaaay better than that, that really made me want to put the guitar down and back slowly away..

I think what makes Buddy's playing so interesting to me (aside from the stellar tone and touch) is the influence of Western Swing. You can tell it's as deeply embedded in his conciousness as the blues and the music of those tres hombres from Tejas... and it all comes out as this beautiful melange of styles.

When Bud's solo began, I ran and got my guitar hoping to glean a few ideas of notes he played that I didn't expect to hear (I did!). Then I listened to Gary's solo (RIP)all the way through, and never felt compelled to go back and pick anything out. Don't get me wrong, he was an outstanding player and I love the Still Got the Blues LP, I just didn't hear anything that twisted my ear like in Bud's solo.

I think that big smile that John Mayall gives at the 5:38 marker is all you need to know about what he thought of that solo!

I was a fly on the wall for several of Gary’s ‘closed’ sound checks where it was just him onstage tweaking his rig for the evening, I gota tell y’all I was slack-jawed by all the different styles I heard him running through, the blues and rock stuff you’d expect, but he did a chord melody ‘Moon River’ that had my ol’ pentatonic head spinnin’. He knowed more’n he showed fo’ sho’! Gary helped me a LOT by having us open for him on his next to last UK tour, I will always be thankful and indebted.
