I braved Chicago traffic Friday afternoon and too the 20 mile journey from the suburbs into Chicago Music Exchange to try a Z-Plus. It was worth the time spent. I had been curious and now I have GAS big time for a Z-Plus. Typical great sounding MAZ front end. The interaction between the volume and master is terrific. Smoothest overdrive and the clean really is special. Bouncing between 7 & 15 watts provided additional palette of satisfyingly sultry tone. I was so engrossed that I forgot the salesmen didn't even give me a tone bypass pedal to try. So consequently I never even tried the bypass.
It was a combo lite with a Z-12.Physically a very manageable package.
Then I realized I had to feed the meter again or pay a big ticket. It wasn't the color combo I desire, and I'm in a quandary now. Color choice and studio or combo lite. The biggest challenge is I promised myself to get rid of one to bring in another. Hate to lose my MAZ Jr, but it is a heavy 2x10 combo. On the other hand my Ghia head doesn't see a lot of action. But the trade on the MAZ is about 60% of my new cost in '03. Acceptable. I could send in the MAZ for a voicing upgrade that would ultimately cost me less, and perhaps contain my GAS. However I fear that to be only temporary.
Decisions, decisions aside. What an awesome sounding amp. Doc you've done it again.
To be continued.....

Like I told John the other day when he was contemplating buying a Les Paul guitar, "Buy it John." So....buy it John! LOL....

The Plus is a killer amp, so is the Maz and so is the . . . . . . .
My vote would be to get the Maz voice upgrades and the Zplus. Play them side by side and then keep them both because they both sound so awesome.

Keep the Maz, you'll regret selling it. Get the Z-Plus. They have the same chassis, so then you can swap them between the two cabs. So when you take the Maz out, you can lighten the load if you want. Remember, one's got EL-84s and one's got 6V6s, that should be enough to justify it.

Well I’ve gotten rid of 3 different Z amps and playing my 4th.....of course you miss them BUT in my opinion it’s worse piling them up and not playing them, PRIMARILY when you say to yourself one in one out.
The size of cab will change the sound .... combo lite will sound fuller I’d imagine than the studio. I’ve got a Cure in the studio and love the size but miss a bit of the fullness in bigger cabs and/or dual speaker cabs.
If you don’t play the Ghia much now ..... you would more when the MAZ is gone and you’d still have amps with both flavors.
Have fun, life is short.....even though sometimes it seems to take forever.

I want a Z-Plus.
