New to the Z28 forum, having bought my Z28 last November. I'm loving the amp and decided to get a spare Winged "C" EF86 tube. I wanted to check that it works and therefore tried to remove the three tube dampers that were on the original tube to install them on the new tube. I was able to remove two small, rounded profile tube dampers from the original EF86, but can't get the third, much larger damper to budge. It's a thick band with a rectangular cross section. Any advice? I saw Dr. Z installing the tube dampers on one of his AMA Videos (~9:00) and he appeared to use Deoxit to lubricate the rings. Anyone know whether that would help for removing the tube dampers as well? Thanks.

I say leave it on. You don't need 3. I have one on my Winged C. Put the 2 you got off on the on the new one and leave the one you couldn't get off on the old one. FWIW, I've had 2 Z28s. On the first i had no dampers on the EF86. I use 2 each on the 6V6s though (mines a combo).

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try it with the two dampers on the new tube before I try to remove the third one. If I don't have any problems with microphonics, that will make things easier. Since I have a head and you didn't have trouble without any dampers on a combo, I'm optimistic I'll be OK. If not I'll either try Deoxit or Vaseline.

EF86s "go" microphonic. Compared to other preamp tubes, easily. I use dampers on the power tubes to help prevent rattling. When I got my current Z28, it had one ring on the EF86. I'm guessing the damper could help prevent rattling if rattling causes the tube to go microphonic. I don't know if it does or doesn't. If it didn't come with one, I doubt id be looking to buy one. I've Been playing this amp loud for 3 months with no issues.
I too just bought a spare Winged C EF86. @$25, and I think they sound good. I've spent $60 for a NOS Tesla that went microphonic in 6 months, $35 for a Tung Sol that did too.

I use a little..."spit"...not a gob,but...but just enough to wet...works for me and nothing to burn off of ring and tube.
