What is the best way to switch grill cloth from salt and pepper to Z-Wreck?

I bought a pneumatic stapler that I hook to my compressor and it's WAY better than using a hand held Arrow style stapler. Obviously the first step is getting the old cloth off. I remove the stapling with a small flat head screwdriver and a pair of needle nose pliers. To put on the new cloth I start at the top since the Z-Wreck cloth has horizontal lines that you want to line up. I line the cloth up and put one staple in on the top left. Then I go to the top right and put another staple in, pulling the cloth snug and lining it up carefully first. Then I go to the center, put one there, and continue across the top, putting staples halfway in between the previous ones. Then I go to the bottom and square the cloth up with the frame, and do the same stapling procedure but this time I put the first staple in the middle of the bottom. That way when I pull it taut at the sides it's going to remain square to the frame, and the grain of the cloth will be square to the top/bottom and sides. Fill in the bottom as above. Then I go to a side and pull it to equal tension as it is at the top and bottom, staple once in the middle, then I work across the frame from side to side, stapling for equal tension across the fabric. If I've got piping to do, then I put that on as I go, but first I put at least five staples per side in order to secure the cloth. Once the top and bottom are done, the sides are easy.
You want it very snug, but not too tight because it can rattle (per a comment Doc once made). Some grill cloth fabrics will shrink with a hair dryer or a heat gun, but test first on a swatch so you know the temperature to use and what effect it's going to have. Be really careful if you do use a heat gun, it's very easy to melt the fabric. I much prefer to get it right staple by staple.
Hope this helps. It's a labor of love for me!

What is the best way to switch grill cloth from salt and pepper to Z-Wreck? I have found the best way is to call the Postman and have him make you a baffle. He'll charge you approximately $125, no headache and no heartache. I found that it is not an easy task at all. I have a staple gun, etc., it takes practice and experience. I wasted a lot of time and money by trying to do that task by myself. That's my 2 cents. BTW, Mather can no longer get the Z Wreck cloth, or at least that was the case 6 months ago. In that case that you cannot get the cloth you may need to talk to the shop.

If you have trouble getting Z-Wreck cloth consider getting a complete baffle. When I converted my JAZ from 1x12 to 2x10 I bought one from the factory. I don't remember how much it was but it was reasonable and the cab was "stock" after the swap.

I agree, Brian. I've done a few grilles and it's a tedious, time consuming task. $125? What is the address??? I've got a couple of grilles I'd love to have Wreck cloth on! Is Mather the supplier that builds Doc's cabs?
I think the Z-Wreck grilles are the classiest looking in the industry.

I would work the order through the shop.

For the uninitiated, what is the deal with Zwreck cloth and its lack of availability?

For the uninitiated, what is the deal with Zwreck cloth and its lack of availability? I always thought the Z Wreck grill cloth was a Dr Z exclusive design.

Thank you everyone for all the input. I removed my baffle this morning and emailed Dr Z Repairs for a RMA. I’m going to ship it to them first thing tomorrow. I’ll check back when it is returned.

I'll be right back.............................................................................

When I installed cloth for a custom speaker cab, I took a hint from a good YouTube post and did this...mist the cloth with water from a spray bottle before you start attaching it. If it has a distinct pattern, match the first side up (stapling, etc) to keep your pattern linear...just slightly using the minimal amount of tension. Over to the opposite side...work from the center again...modest tension only to keep the pattern to the edge consistent. Then the ends, the same way. For my cloth, then a hair dryer to it and it snugged up very nicely and preserved the pattern.
I'd at least try it. If you're going to pull and change it anyways...can you really hurt much? It'll just cost a little cloth to learn a lesson and then send it out if need be. ?

So, sending it in gets the cloth you want and a professional job to boot.

That’s right. I sent it for Z- Wreck cloth, black piping, and a black Z Logo on my Z-Lux.

Now where did I put those black knobs?[/quote] The Z-Wreck grill cloth is the classiest looking out there IMHO. It goes splendidly with all Z amp tolex colours.

If you have the cash and don't mind shipping...a pro job at the shop is a great way to guarantee your results!

I just got notice that my Z-Lux speaker baffle is done and will be shipped Monday. There is one more question for my Z brothers. There is some white piping on either side of the combo amp head. However, it is not there on the head only amps on Dr Zs site. Should I remove the piping on my combo now, color it black, or replace it with black?

Stephen,
I would ask Z to sell you enough to redo the piping. It's a delicate job taking it off but it would like like a finished product.
