I experimented with several 6V6's in my JAZ (basically the same amp) and came to the conclusion that the JJ's were the only ones that would survive. I tried both new manufacture and NOS

It's not the plate voltage that is the problem. It's that the power tubes are biased hotter than 6V6's will dissipate. All but the JJ's.

I also quit experimenting with other tubes because I just decided I liked the sound of the original JJ's. Once again I figured out I like Doc's ears. Duh. I guess if Doc likes the Tung-Sol 5881's then that's a viable option. Something different but not necessarily better.
I fixed the rattle problem by converting to a head/cab configuration. I can use the JJ's and not worry about it.

^this. One of the things I love about Z’s is that the Doc’s ears are sympatico with mine, apparently, so that the trial and error he does in development result in an amp I love. This removes me from the “tube buffet“ - I used to be a tube hound but now I get to relax and enjoy playing knowing there’s nothing I’m gonna do to radically improve the sound of these amps.
I can’t think of another amp I’ve owned (boutique or mass produced) I can say that about.

I tried the 5881's, but went back to the JJ's. Nice to have a viable option for a different tube.

Still cranking the stock quad of JJ's in mine.... Running 40 watts and fairly loud...no buzzes, hisses or rattles....just insanely great tone from the hands and ears of Leo and Doc...why change that??

I went to 5881s for about 6 months and went back to the stock JJ6V6S tubes. I went through some noisy ones but then got a good quad that are hanging in there just fine.
