Howdy,
In my experience, heavier Guitars tend to sustain better, in general. Of all the guitars I've owned, the guitar with the best sustain is a humble 1998 Gibson Les Paul special, with P90s. She weighs a pedestrian 8 lbs. and plays like a dream.

Resonance. Resonance has everything to do with sustain. I've been thinking that perhaps it's not the weight per se of the guitar, but the proportionate weight of the neck and body that may contribute to the overall sustain of the guitar. Perhaps a "certain percentage" (whatever that might be) of neck vs body weight would end up being more resonant. We might discover that a neck that was 18% of the body weight is ideal. Just thinking out loud, but it would be really interesting if one could determine the ratio of neck/body weight in guitars that are great sustainers that ring out vs the ones that are dead and dull sounding.

My lighter weight Ice blue mettalic strat sounds fatter and warmer and sustains better then my heavier Strat. I tried different necks and different pick ups trying to warm up my brighter strat and I got it to where I know can deal with it I have fender custom shop 69s in my lightweight strat and fender pure vintage 65s in my heavy one. I agree with the fact that everything plays a part in the guitars tone the weight the strings the pickups the neck ect....

Of all of my guitars, including Tele, Strat solid, Strat hollow, Gretsch chambered, Guild chambered, CS 336 semi hollow, ES330 hollow and Heritage Golden Eagle hollow, the one with the most sustain, hands down, is the 336. I assume that part of this is attributable to the fact that the sides, back and center block are all one piece of wood and the top is two matched pieces of wood (no laminates are used anywhere), plus it has a one-piece neck, I believe. It is very resonant.
