An output tube died on my old interstate 66 yesterday, quite a flash of light! They were groove tube hp 66’s rating of 4. I just bought a nos matched pair of GT HP 66’s on reverb with the same rating of 4. Can I just pop them in since same rating and the bias is good or ? Also I haven’t had an output tube die in some time, do they usually get really bright and flash out like that? Any possibility something else is wrong I should be concerned with?

I would recommend replacing both tubes as your description indicates an internal short in one tube. Depending on how long it took to shut the amp down, damage has likely been done to the other as this condition puts the remaining tube in essentially an unbiased state. Start with a fresh set and rock on!

So am I ok with the current bias setting since the new set of tubes have the same rating (4) as last set?

I would still check it. The ratings are helpful in that they let you know what to buy so you’re in the ballpark so to speak, but I would still check it I think, and then you’ll know for sure.

You should be OK. When you power up the first time watch the new set for awhile to make sure they don't red plate. Play through the amp also and if it sounds good to you you'll be alright. You could have the bias checked but that rating system's purpose is to eliminate the need for that. I've always found it to be pretty reliable.
