Hi
Sorry if these have been answered before but i have a few questions.
I tried a Z Lux out a while (combo) and did love it but its been a while and can't remember a few things.
1) Head and Cab version v combo. Will the head and cab give a bigger sound than the combo? - I only have a combo, but I would expect with the added flexibility of, say, a 4x12 cab, you'd get a "bigger" sound. I find that the combo is more than enough for all the stages I play around Austin, though.
2) Master all the the way up makes it a non master amp then use volume to get the whole amp working. - I keep my master dimed MOST of the time. Not sure if it defeats the pre/post setup, though.
3) Tremolo - what type is this? Bias or i'm guessing optical? - Tube bias tremolo, actually:
www.theguitarmagazine.com/gear/dr-z-z-lux-review/ 4) Whats the reverb and tremolo like? - The reverb is lovely, imo. I set it and forget it, depending on the room. It DOES get more pronounced if you kick in the "boost" function, and I sometimes dial it back a bit when I use the boost. The tremolo is fabulous. The depth and speed controls allow you to dial in just the right amount, and it's a very smooth wave.
5) Great with OD and Boosts? is it fussy? - Don't know. I'm a guitar-cable-amp guy, but others have reported very positive results.
6) How does it compare to deluxe or is it closer to a super or vibrolux in 40w mode? - That depends on what power tubes you run it with. With 6V6s, it sounds like a very articulate Deluxe Reverb on steroids, but with the Z chime and articulation.
7) Does it take 6L6 tubes? how does that compare? - No, but it DOES take a quad of medium grade Tung-Sol 5881 reissues without any adjustments at all. Running that configuration, it sounds like a really good Super Reverb, IMO.
8) How active is the eq range? Can you get a lot of shape from it? - Generally, yes. The tone controls seem interactive and effective. However, if you engage the boost function (which bypasses the tone stack to let more signal head to the power section), the efficacy of the tone knobs is reduced and you get a lot of midrange.
9) Nice breakup? - Extremely, and very touch-sensitive.
10) Cuts through the mix in a band settings? -Very well.
11) Can you run super clean, really loud? - Clean, and loud, but not VERY loud.
Thanks in advance! - No problem. Hope that helps.
