I've heard numerous references to the DB4 being dark but I never found it that way! This clip is fabulous and even though as bright as, say a Vox-type amp, I thing it sounds fantastic. Great clip š

Nice! What looper were you using? Thanks Mike, Itās a Tc Electronics Ditto X2. A little on the large side and difficult to time perfectly but Iāve never had any problems with it.

Really nice tone, great playing. I admire the loop creation, I've got a TC Flashback X4 but I've never been able to create a loop that satisfied me. Good job, brother!

Generally, Iāll use the looper for a single rhythm line to solo over but itās nice to work on multiple layers to create depth now and again. Also, thank you Doc for the kind words!

Z Every time I fire up my DB4, I get all kinds of complements on the tone. I can't tell you how many times I've had sound guys, other musicians, gear nerds, etc., look at the amp and be astounded there are EL84's in there. A few weeks back, I procured a medium/high gain channel switcher from a brand that I will not name for a new project I'm working on. It just leaves me so unfulfilled. It's incredibly hard to dial in, picky with speakers, picky with guitars, just frustrating. I play it and I long for the DB4. What are the chances I can get a 2 channel amp, DB4 on channel one, and EMS JCM mode on channel two?!?!?!

I have been for quite some time, but I needed something on the 50w+ and higher gain side of the spectrum. I think I'd compromise if I could get an EMS in a standard red head cab with Z Wreck grill...

I've heard numerous references to the DB4 being dark but I never found it that way! This clip is fabulous and even though as bright as, say a Vox-type amp, I thing it sounds fantastic. Great clip š It's funny that you say this, because I was just about to reply to goodez's video by saying, "I'd recognize that signature darkness & fatness anywhere--that's a DB4!" I had a DB4 myself for a while, and it's weird because no it's not "too dark" and can definitely get bright; but I still would characterize that sound in my head as "dark & fat." I believe Doc when he says this amp is misunderstood, or not at all. It has definitely been one of the more uniquely-intriguing Z-amps I've played. If only I could justify the full 38 watts (I can't--it's loud!) I might want to revisit it someday. Same as the Remedy, I just couldn't justify spending on all that power in reserve, but never using it. Now, build me an 18-watt-only version (a DB2, perhaps?) and I think I'd be buying one right away. I suppose I should've shut up and just used my attenuator more, though.

I guess 'dark' is not wrong, but it just usually has a negative connotation to it. I think I prefer fat or full. Now mind you, I'm always talking single coil....so, with a set of dark humbuckers things might be different.

The DB4 has a half power switch on the back, thus making it an 18 watt amp. That may be exactly what you need. I use mine with a a Fryette PowerStation and it is perfect.

I forgot! I believe it did have the 18/38 W switch on the back, thanks for reminding me. Now, Brad Paisley's amp is the ONE that does not have the switch--he gets the "big boy 38-W only" version. Still, though... I felt it slightly wasteful (for me, not in general/overall) for me to be only ever using 1/2 of an amp that is capable of so much more volume. It's a BEAST of an amp, though. Never gotten that kind of tone from any other amp before.

I have to say, I think the DB4 loses some of its mojo in half power mode. Feels like it softens up a bit, which may be good for some.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go duck...

Get that helmet on lol. Idk maybe doc can confirm that theory. I will say that Iām fairly certain that clip was done in half power mode (18W). I love that he is now offering half power modes on the lower wattage amps such as the z-plus. Hopefully, that will continue with future models or updated models.

Z Dr. Z, Parkway is my dealer. Honestly theyāre great and if Iām ready to plunk down the cash and buy one, they have no problem ordering one up for me. They just werenāt planning on stocking them at this time due to space constraints and I totally get that. Iām also not ready to plunk any cash down on amp for probably 5-6 months. I am also leery of ordering an amp Iāve never tried and donāt know if it would work for me and my sound especially that costs that much. So I donāt fault them for not ordering any at this time. Doesnāt mean I wouldnāt love to try your newer offerings either! Iāll revisit the conversation with them when I have the money to do more than talk.

Doc's half power option is the best I've ever heard in an amp. I live on half power with the Z Plus, and I really like the DB4 on half power with single coils. I'm sure a lot of what I'm feeling is the result of the speakers not being driven as hard.
