3/4 of our band went, by invitation, to play an open mic here in town last night. The other acts were the usual sonic mixed bag--a couple of decent players, a couple of super weirdos, a few folks who were beginning players giving it a shot. The backline was also a mixed bag--a solid state Vox 1x12 combo that sounded thin and ice-picky when turned up, and something that looked like it was from about 1982 with a 15" speaker that only produced clean sounds--might have been a bass amp. Fortunately, I brought my Cure and a Pedaltrain Nano that was basically tuner, dirt, boost, delay--and while I didn't play very well (met with a friend and had a few beers prior, then our set got delayed by almost an hour so hey let's have more beer), I got compliments on my tone from the two guys who were decent players. Way back when I still tried to play golf, my golf pro scolded me once at a lesson for not taking better care of my clubs. "Come on, man," he said. "You got to look good out there. If you look good, you feel good. If you feel good, you play good." There was something to it then--my lessons with him were the only time in my golfing days when I could hit something approaching a draw--he knew what he was doing. Something similar's true in music. If your rig sounds good, you feel good. If you feel good--you know the rest.

My tennis coach when I was a teen always said “buy the best gear you can - you’ll play better knowing you have great gear ... and if you don’t you can’t blame anything but yourself.”
Wise words.

My basketball coach said "You should study hard so that your schooling can get you into college. Uh. Basketball is not going to do it."
Definitely want some good gear.

Knowing your gear and having confidence in yourself...sometimes the stars align and we know it when it happens.

I have a friend who buys these really high end amps and never gigs them. He will plug into whatever they have at the gig. I get on his case about it all the time. It just don't make sense to me. Having a high quality amp makes me want to play it live thats the whole purpose. Sound the best you can right? He tells me well that my showroom amp. Im like who you showing it too? It never leaves your bedroom! Heck i never even seen It!

I can't see having an amp that's too nice to gig. Unless I'm a rich investor/collector/speculator that only buys and sells for profit. Makes no sense to me, but that's the way a lot of today's world strikes me; with no sense. I want people to hear my good sounding gear, and it inspires me to play my best whenever I plug in.

I have even lugged around my heavy Vibro King because I bought it for the tone. I got a case with wheels now so it’s easier but it’s still heavy getting it in and out of my vehicle but I bought it to use it live. For those paranoid about dinging up your amps just get a studio slips cover made. You will sleep better at night.

That’s why I got the Cure. It’s light enough to take anywhere and it will do clean and dirt.

Right on Stephen. My Cure gets the call more and more often because of all it is. I never cease to be amazed at it's tone, size, and light weight.

I buy amps with the intention of gigging them. If I've had an amp for a year or two and it's never been out to a gig, I figure it's probably time to let it go--just not the right amp at the right time. Both of my Z-Luxes get regular gig-time--they're my #1 and #2 right now--they always sound like I want them to--but the Cure is pretty true to its billing as a stripped-down half-Lux, and it can do a lot of what the Lux does. What it can't do is sound as big and authoritative as the Lux, but you don't always need that, and even so it can get pretty close. I dig it most when it's getting some tweed-like tones--it's raunchy and great for blues and rock.

Jon, is that your video in the Dr Z group on facebook? Hey Mark--just saw this! Yeah--that's me and our bass player Laura and our new drummer John. I'm sloppy and my timing's not great (beer!), and there's some clipping in the video which somebody shot on their phone, but the Cure sounds pretty great to my ear.

Thanks, brother! I'm loving that Tele these days--finally switched out the bridge pickup to try to address the big output dropoff between neck and bridge and it's just killer now. Also slightly under 6 lbs., which is awesome for a guy with lower back issues.
