I never knew the entire history of the band and, sadly i admit, I never realized what a talent Terry Kath was.

I never realized what a talent Terry Kath was. Pick up the "album" CTA 1....Back when they were Chicago Transit Authority....As much as you like horns (and guitar), Ian, it will keep you occupied for a few good weeks/years/decades.....

This one:
The following album (simply called "Chicago" or Chicago II {silver cover} at the time) is badass too..... I pretty much lost interest in them after that, as they went the way of the $$$...

I can site Transit Authority as in my top 5 albums that turned me onto wanting to play the guitar. It covers so many things as a band that album from jazz to commercial to the hendrixy free form guitar to jazz rock. It's never out of my cd ,s stored in my car.

Great band...and Terry K was an outstanding guitarist. I've still got my vinyl copies of the first three double albums. Amazing!!!! About five years ago I bought a CD box set of the first ten albums. The first three are still the best. Some good stuff on albums 4 to 10, but they definitively lost their edge on the later releases.

Just checked our Netflix listings.....Yes, we've got History of Chicago over here too. I'll be watching it later tonight, or perhaps tomorrow. Thanks for the heads up, Ian.

It’s well done. I watched it last night.
I’m a big Kath fan too. I loved that bit where Jimi Hendrix tapped the trumpet player on the shoulder and said, “Your guitar player is better than me.”

I still think the first three albums are the best. Drugs, management and production issues took their toll on the band. Shame that Cetera wouldn't attend the induction into the Hall of Fame.

They looked the part as well in the movie "Electra Glide in Blue". I saw them open for Jimi - changed my view of a horn section as well as the 1-4-5 R&R I had been listening to.

I seriously can’t figure out Cetera. I get that he and the band went different directions, and I have no doubt harsh things were said, but that had to be one of the more “calm” departures from a band ever. Hard to imagine carrying an axe for that long.
