I’m totally in love with Z-Lux but this morning during practice at the studio I have a strange issue ☹️ Only playing my Fano SP6 and only when I play a certain note on the freatboard the amp buzz!! (seems to be an electrical issue) Nothing happen with strat, tele, sg... What do you think guys? Please help me. Cheers, Francesco. If it is only happening with the Fano I would speculate it is the guitar electronics and not the amp. Is it shielded?

Does the buzz sound come from the speaker or is it something in the cab buzzing? First thing would be to go over all the bolts and screws on the amp and make sure they're snug. If it's coming from the speaker, could be a tube... Hi!! Thanks for reply. The buzz come from spesker, no doubt. So...could be a tube? I had an issue with a crackling sound not too long ago, but it wasn't related to any one guitar or note. New tubes fixed my issue. Try tightening everything on the amp and see if that helps. If not, a new set of tubes may be in order.

My guess, having had similar issues with various amps and guitars, is that it is a resonance issue. It's only occurring with one guitar, and that guitar doesn't cause buzz with other amps, yes? If the buzz is internal to the amp -- I assume you ruled out something nearby in the studio vibrating -- it could be mechanical or electrical. When I've had a similar problem, it's always been a power tube. In some instances, adding tube dampers helped. In another case, it was metal tube covers. Removing the covers eliminated the noise. (If I need to move the amp, I put the covers back on for protection, then take them off to play.) I'm not sure if this is the cause of your problem, but I hope the info is helpful.

Hi!! Thanks a lot for help. Yes, the issue is only using my Fano SP6 and only if I play a certain note (F at 2nd string). I’m sure that is an amp issue but.....today, few minutes ago, same guitar, and no issue at all 🙄 So, could be a vibration? Guys, I’m confused. I’ll keep you posted next days... Thanks as usual!! When you say it could be a vibration, do you mean of something in the room? Move it around the house and see if the problem goes away.

I did, had them in there for maybe three months. They were ok, but I went back to the JJ 6V6's because they sound sweeter to my ears. I get all the headroom I need, just crank the Master up full and keep the volume low.

There is a big increase in clean headroom and overall volume as doc says? I actively use a quad of medium grade Tung Sol 5881s (per Dr. Z's recommendation), and I prefer them over the 6V6s. To my ears, they give a more clean headroom, and give the amp more of a Fender blackface sound. Dr. Z described using the 5881s as turning the Z-Lux almost into a "mini Twin Reverb". The 6V6s, to my ears, added a considerable amount of mid-range overdrive when the amp was cranked. Were I in a rock and roll band, I'd have kept them in there. I am, however, something resembling a blues player here in Austin for the last 20+ years, and really appreciate and prefer the drive characteristics of the 5881s. They strongly resemble the 6L6s I prefer. Hope that helps. Scott Here's a link to my original post about the 5881s: ztalk.proboards.com/thread/75581/5881-impressions

I agree with what Scott says. I typically don't drive my amp loud enough to get the power tubes really cooking so that is a primary reason for my choice. I use pedals to get my over the top drive, and keep the amp's preamp on the edge of breakup.

I use pedals to get my over the top drive, and keep the amp's preamp on the edge of breakup. And I'm a guitar-cable-amp kind of guy, relying on the instrument's volume/tone controls as well as my attack to get grit when I want it. I also make use of the Z-Lux' "boost" function when using single-coil equipped guitars (strat, tele, etc.). With humbuckers (Les Paul, ES335), though, I find I don't need it.

I never play completely clean, and I don't own a SR, but I've been gigging the Z-Lux for about 18 months with my little blues-rock-r&b band. I run it at moderate volumes with pedals for gain and it's stellar. Always warm and fat--beefy like a Florentine steak! I think if you can find a used one in excellent condition at a subsntial discount off the new price, you'll definitely dig it. The amp so nice I bought it twice! Welcome to the forum and happy new year to you in Tuscany--one of the most beautiful places in the world! Hi!! Thanks a lot for your experience. It’s very important for me the Z-Lux stay clean where my 1965 Blackface Deluxe Reverb and my Lazy J20 won’t. As I told first I can’t try the amp before so I must be sure that: 1.is a good clean platform at 40W when I want use pedals in front of in small/medium gigs. 2.is lightweight and easy portable in the Clubs. 3.have a good blackface tone comparable with a Super Reverb That’s my needs 😊 Thanks again!! I have a Z-Lux and a Super Reverb Reissue. If I absolutely had to sell one, it would be the Super for a few reasons. For one , it is extremely heavy and bulky and very hard to transport. And although it has a beautiful sparkle and presence like no other amp, it has a very loose low end when cranked compared to the Z-Lux. The Z-Lux also takes pedals much better than the Super, especially overdrive pedals which to me sound a little fizzy through the Super. Also, The master volume and 20/40 watt power switch makes the Z-Lux more versatile and allows for a greater variety of tones. I don't need a lot of volume/clean headroom but if needed, I have a DR Z 2x10 convertible extension cabinet that does the trick, although I rarely use it. You may try a more efficient speaker if you need even more headroom. Regarding the buzzing/vibrating sound coming from your speaker, I had a similar issue where a certain note on my 5th string was causing a vibrating sound like rattling glass and it turned out to be a power tube. Replaced them with Tung Sol 6v6s and the amp is perfect.
