I find myself at times needing some more sound dispersion and fullness while using the Maz18nr 1x12 on a bigger stage. Sometimes feel under-powered. Would adding a 1x12 extension cab give me some fullness and volume boost? Or do you think I’d be better off spending the cash on a more powerful amp for those situations? I’d really like a Stangray...!

You sound like a really good candidate for a DB4!
I loved both of my Maz's, but there is just something about the DB4 that blows me away every time I play it. It's got all of the grunt and thump I need. Hard to believe it's a 4xEL84 amp.

My maz's can get over powered as well...ill take a RC boost if I know its going to be a blaster....never plugged a db-4...4/84s has to have some grunt!!!

Well, I was surfing reverb and made an offer on a stangray 1x12 combo. Sort of surprised they accepted! Awaiting the stangray...!

Well that escalated quickly... I have found that the best approach for a successful GAS attack is to visit Reverb.com!

Well - now that you have a stangray coming, it's kind of a moot point, but my first thought was to ask about the maz's speaker...

The speaker is a celestion Alnico cream... the amp sounds great with the master dimed and the volume at halfway. Any more than that it gets dirtier with no noticeable volume increase. Just runs out of steam for cleaner Tele country sounds. No knock on the amp at all, just need a different tool for that application.

The alnico cream is still a 100db speaker...pretty loud.
But that Stangray is a very different amp. It will be CLEAN country tones. (I've had two) With a tele, it's a little difficult to overdrive it. You'll need pedals for dirt.
What's the speaker in the 'ray combo?

I would have opted for a closed back cabinet with a G12H30

The Ray has the celestion gold. That's what my 'ray had. It will be a LOUD combination. You might want to start looking now for a plexiglass shield.

I was also in the camp of looking into a different speaker......maybe a 102db Eminence C-Rex or something similar. Glad you snagged the Ray! Give us a report once you spend some time with it.

Congratulations on the Ray! Too bad you couldn't keep both. Yeah, that would have been sweet. But, had to free up some capital to make the purchase. The Sting Ray is the most expensive amp I’ve ever purchased...

If the gold is too loud, try a creamback M. They're reasonably similar in tone. Yeah, I know the creamback has a little more bass and won't have the upper register shimmer like the gold. But the creamback is significantly quieter than the gold. It allows you to crank up the amp to find it's sweet spot...but at a lower volume because the speaker is less efficient. (which in this case is a good thing)
If you venture away from the gold/blue/greenback/creamback tone, I think most people wouldn't like it.
Celestion hadn't made the creamback yet when I had my 'ray combo. If they did, who knows, I might still have my 'ray combo!
When I sold my 'ray head, I demo'd it to a guy using a 1x12 openback with the creamback. After a couple of weeks, the guy called me up and said he can't get the tone I got when I demo's it in my living room. I asked him to describe what speakers and cabs he was using. After listening, I said "Get yourself a creamback M".

I’m going to give the gold a good run. I also have one of the 90 watt celestion Alnico creams I can swap out with the gold. I’m seriously considering getting myself an extension cab and running the gold and Alnico cream together for a 2x12 setup as well.

A friend of mine, also the guy who first turned me on to Dr Z amps, played through a MAZ 18 NR combo with a Greenback. It was good for indoor gigs but on an outdoor stage he had the same problem with coverage. He started using a Z BEST cab in those situations instead of the combo speaker and never had a problem again.
