Planning a move to the UK, and hoping some of you might be able to provide advice. Obviously, there's different voltage running there vs. US, ~240 VAC. In the past, I'd always used a large outboard transformer for guitar amps, but it's unwieldy and annoying and I'd prefer not to do that unless a last resort especially because we'd be there for at least years and moreso because it's annoying to lug around and can't be put into a surge protector. I think the other option would be to either (a) change wiring on the transformer, or (b) replace the transformer altogether. Any clues on how best to do this, and if replacing the transformer, which one to get?

Send a note to Don in repairs and ask for the specs on the 240 V xfmr, or better yet ask them to order one for you. 2. You could either send in the amp to Dr. Z or have a local tech do it. 3. The transformer wires are not easily accessible so it involves pulling out the board, etc.. Point is, if you go to a local tech please make sure they are qualified. I personally would pull the chassis out of the cabinet and ship on only the chassis and tubes. I would send it to the Dr. Z shop. BV

Exactly what Brian suggests is what I'd do if I were you. Don't attempt it yourself if you aren't experienced with amp repair.

Here's a detailed plan of what I would do. 1. Sell it. 2. Buy a new one when I get to the UK. I like the path of least resistance.

To my knowledge there's only one approved repair centre for Z amps in the UK, which is www.essexamprepairs.co.uk/. You could always give them a call. Other than that, I would cut the potential hassle down to a minimum and do as irreversal suggested above. As you probably know, the only UK importer is www.peachguitars.com/dr-z, where John Priest is the guy to contact.

Sometimes, I hit that nail square on the head! When do you get your new amp?

I think I may opt for the even less work required option of just getting the outboard transformer. That way I can just plug my pedal board and amp into it directly and don’t also have to buy a new power supply for the pedalboard.
I’ve made the mistake of selling guitars and amps in the past and most of the time I’ve regretted it!
So really what I should be thinking about is whether I should just buy a 240VAC Cure. 😎

When do you get your new amp? Humbucker said another 2 weeks or so. Should be right before Christmas. Very nice. I am jealous, but I certainly have plenty of cool amps. I am building a single channel deluxe with a mid knob and PPIMV at about 50 watts. I also have a jacked up Princeton started, with a mid knob as well. Looking forward to your report.
