Hello all!
So I recently purchased my first Dr Z amp, the RX ES 2x12 combo. Let me start by saying with exception to a brief stint with a Peavey Delta Blues this is kinda my first foray into an EL84 amp, certainly the first EF86.
So far I fricken love this thing, but lately at rehearsals I'm noticing an unfamiliar sound with that is throwing me off - with any of my dirtboxes engaged (clean boost, hotcake clone, tonebender mk1 fuzz clone, and non are dimed. At most maybe 2 o'clock on level), any lower notes on the wound strings seems to produce this vocal, envelope filter sounding "bloom". It's pretty pronounced and distracting. I've seen a few other threads that seem to hint a similar farting kinda sound on other models.
I don't know if this is the tube compressing/clipping, a bad tube, a characteristic of the EF86 or just EL84's in general, or I'm simply punching the preamp too hard? I'm certainly accustomed to amps with a bit more headroom and knew that going in, but this isn't something I expected at 45 watts. Oh and this is from a Tele loaded w/ low to medium output pickups, mostly selected to both pickups in series. Also it's loaded with Greenbacks. I messed around with the eq, particularly lowering the bass which tamed it just a tad. I'm a little worried how it's gonna sound when I plug my P-90 SG into it.
Any suggestions? Thanks!!

You didn't note the amp volume setting. Also, since this is a used amp the age and condition of any of the tubes is suspect. I would certainly own a spare known-good EF86 if I owned an amp with that tube, even if the amp was currently working properly.

Welcome to the Forum - a lot of good information and people here! My guess is a bad tube. Try Doc's trouble shooting guide to see if you can determine which tube may be causing the problem. drzamps.com/info/faq-troubleshoot/
