I am ok with hard sci fi,but really love space opera-4:30 movie stuff, wally wood EC comics, basil wolverton comics, and some hammer stuff that was on the border of horror/sci fi. But John Carpenter's remake of the Thing was defenitely top 5 for me,the paranoia, unresolved ending,a lot to like there.

1950s and 1960s
Forbidden Planet War of the Worlds Invisible Invaders Five Million Years to Earth (Quatermass and the Pit in UK) Earth vs the Flying Saucers Invasion of the Body Snatchers (although this could also be classed as a horror film) The Mysterians Them (again, could count as a horror film as might other giant creature films that have "science gone amok" as a plot device) The Thing (From Another World) This Island Earth
Honorable mentions: It, the Terror from Beyond Space (Alien lifted its plot from this one); 20 Million Miles to Earth; Monolith Monsters
1970s and 1980s
2001 (Yes, I know it came out in 1968, but it was such a distinct break from what preceded it) Alien/Aliens Blade Runner The Terminator The Thing (Carpenter's take on the original tale by John W. Campbell) Star Wars IV, V, VI Stalker
That's enough from me. Btw, Forbidden Planet is my #1 overall.

The flying robots in Sky Captain are straight out of The Mechanical Monsters, one of the Fleischer Superman cartoons from the 1940s.

I think it was one of the first movies blending in live actors with a totally digital background. It's artistically timeless IMO. I wish it was a series as well.

Plan 9 From Outer Space, how could I have forgotten that one?
In that same vein, I totally forgot about one of my favorite guilty pleasure SF movies, Killer Klowns From Outer Space. Maybe not in my top 10 though.
Great thread. Many of my favorite movies listed here, SF or not.

Plan 9 From Outer Space I did consider listing that. I saw it on TV when I was a kid under the lurid title "Grave Robbers from Outer Space". I'm sure this was sometime in the late 1950s. (KeithA, I trust you have seen Johnny Depp as "Ed Wood.") While (back) on topic, I think Frankenstein can be considered science fiction. And so could The Invisible Man. Two novels that became great Universal films. (And Bride of Frankenstein was even better.)

Depp was great in Ed Wood !

(And Bride of Frankenstein was even better.) I think Frankenstein is science fiction as well. It fits in the "science gone amok" as you mentioned lol. Who doesn't like when science goes amok? I think the dividing line is vampires. This can get blurry with films like "league of extraordinary gentlemen". I would include any Jules Verne novels "gone movie" into science fiction too. In any event keep them coming! Always looking for sci fi recommendations !

Most of the above mentioned, plus Stephen King's "The Stand." Actually the book is 10x better than the flick...
