I just bought a new z28. It sounds great, but my Ghia has more headroom. The 28 is a 1x12 with a creamback, And the ghia is a 2x10 with z10’s. Would the difference in speakers account for the ghia having more headroom?

I've had two Z28s, the one I have now(1x12 combo with a Greenback) and a 2x10 combo with those Z Blue Label 10s. The 2x10 definitely had more headroom. Those are clean, efficient 75watt ceramics. That one was too loud to crank live.
Do you WANT the Z28 to have more headroom? Or less?

This^^^^^^^^
You should get a higher rated speaker or drop in a NOS 5751 in V1 to get some clean.

Also check the bias. If it's biased hot you will get earlier breakup. In case you didn't know, unlike the Ghia, with the Z28 when you change tubes you have to rebias the amp. If you haven't, you could also put the amps back to back and run the speakers of one into the other one and check out your theory.

It’s a new amp. I haven’t replaced the power tubes. I did replace the 12ax7 pi tube with a nos 5751. It cleaned up a little. It sounds fine. I was just expecting it to be cleaner than the ghia. I will try it through the ghia speakers.

The Creambacks are less efficient and a bit dirtier . Connect up the two 10's , turn the Treble & Bass controls down, and turn the Volume up. Z

With the 2×10, I ran a JAN GE 5751 in V2. Still too loud to crank, I figured make it a pedal platform. It worked great for that. I personally prefer the less headroom with the 1x12 I have now. Even with the Greenback, i set it at 1030-930-1030 with tbe Brake Lite at 2 clicks with a strat and its plenty headroom for band levels. If I need more, I got 2 clicks to play with.
There are plenty of much louder and cleaner 12s to choose from. The amp if NEW new probably shipped with JJ 6V6s. They aren't the cleanest of tubes. I'm running Gold Lions ri's now, ran TungSol ri's with the 2x10. Power tubes probably make a bigger difference with the Z28 than any amp I've owned.

I prefer the Z-28 without a brake lite. It adds too much compression and darkness for my taste. Now that I’m on my second one I find I run it w the V close to 11 o’clock, T at 2 o clock, and bass near noon or slightly below. There’s plenty of headroom and gain with right hand changes and pedals for color.

I hooked up the 2x10’s from the ghia, and it cleaned right up, but I think I like it better with the creamback. What an awesome amp! The only problem I have now Is trying to decide whether to use the ghia or the z28 at my next gig! Both amps just kill it! Thanks for all of your responses.

I do too, but compromises man! If I could play as loud as I wanted all the time, I'm be playing my Super Reverb at every gig. I can find a happy medium with the Z28 and Brake Lite most always though, but when I'm using it, I'll be using pedals too so that makes it easier. Last gig was NO at 3! controls at 1030-930-1030 with a strat for clean, BB Preamp and FB3 for dirt. I prefer the Z-28 without a brake lite. It adds too much compression and darkness for my taste.
