Hello all,
So I am almost ready to pull the trigger on my first Dr. Z amp. I would like your expert advice as I cannot decide among all the numerous amps the Doc has to offer. I narrowed my choice down to:
- Maz 18 jr (R or NR?) - Maz 38 Sr (R or NR?) - Remedy - Carmen Ghia - (Other?)
First choice would be head + cab (112 or 210) solution.
I play in a fairly loud band with another guitarist using an Orange Dual Dark 50 watts and a quite loud drummer (but not the loudest). Genre is rock, hard rock. Ideally I'd love an amp able to provide a substantially different tone with respect to the dual dark (I'd say more voxy and chimey).
We play mainly in small to medium sized clubs, but some large stages and outdoors events cannot be excluded (in any case the cab will be mic'ed).
Finally, the amp should also suit some "bedroom" level for home playing. In that case the genre goes from rock, to classic rock to blues, etc.
Thank you in advance for the help!

Of all the amps you mentioned, I have only owned and played the Remedy. The Remedy is a GREAT rock amp, has a fantastic master volume and a 1/2 power switch and only comes in a head. I used it in a very loud country classic rock band and the only thing it didn't do well was getting a great LOUD classic country clean tone. But that doesn't sound like what you need.
The other guitar player in my band once used the Maz Jr and it sounded great. His only complaint was that it didn't have the headroom he needed for LOUD clean tones. I think that is ONLY an issue for people with really loud bands!

The great thing about that amp is that you won't NEED any OD pedals to get great tone. You CAN use them without any problem, but the amp really has the goods in that area.

My first Z was a Maz 18NR, which I loved, but I never got a chance to open it up and it was very heavy. I now have a Maz 8 that I use for Church, a Z-Lux for bigger gigs, and I just got a Cure for hauling to open mic nights.
I would recommend the Maz 18 in the new Lite cabinet for your needs. Beware, you can’t have just one!
Welcome to the forum.

Of all the amps you've mentioned, I've owned them all except the Maz Sr. You play "rock, hard rock" in a fairly loud band? I'd go with the Remedy. I'm concerned the Jr and Ghia won't have enough power for "light breakup you can push with pedals". (too bad, they're fantastic amps!) If you get a remedy, make sure you pair it with a Celestion creamback M speaker. (the two were made for each other)
As far as a bedroom amp goes...go get a cheap used line6 spider or something. Trying to squash a tube amp down to bedroom level isn't the best.

I should have clarified:
2x12: greenbacks 1x12: Creamback M
One greenback cannot handle the remedy on full power. (I use a 1x12 w creamback w my remedy)

I think I am pretty sold on the Remedy delik, You should also consider the Therapy. I think it is the most versatile amp in that range of amps. Smooth deep rich tones, it goes dirty real fast if you let it, or you can set it up for super clean. The Therapy is my Desert Island amp. You won't go wrong with any of the choices.

That is fair, the Therapy can do it all and end up being a sweet clean tone with a touch of hair.

One vote for a Carmen Ghia with a 10” greenback. Of my 4 Zs (maz 8, z28, m12, and cg) the CG is my current favorite. So few nobs, so many tones!

Finally bought a Remedy with MV and a 112 cab with a V30 speaker (which I already plan to swap). Should arrive on friday and I am really looking forward. The therapy was also another very good option but It wasn’t in stock so I interpreted this as a sign...
