Ive been playing the Z28 a lot over the past few days. My new one is a 1x12 combo with a Greenback and a Brake Lite. Straight in, I like the Greenback with the Z28(I'm not a big Celestion fan really). But I don't like it with a Tube Screamer-type pedal. Too much midrange! I did like the Fulltone Fat Boost3 with it, but I need an OD pedal, as the FB3 will be my lead boost. I'm open to any suggestion, but want something that can ride the fence between OD and distortion...without being mid heavy.

Have you tried Dic's pedal?? It's a twofer and sounds really good! Can get just what you might be looking for!

I had a Bad Bob. I'm sure it would be killer with the Z28, as it was for a 5E3. But I have a Fulltone Fat Boost3 which I'm sure can do the same thing. I'm looking for something to use as a "base overdrive" for when I'm using the amp as a clean pedal platform.
The Z Drive looks awesome too, but I'm needing a single sized pedal.

You're doing it wrong. That amp needs to be run on 10. Your clean platform is the guitar volume on 5...

I agree w using the guitar volume for your clean but if you choose to set the amp clean I'd recommend trying the BB pre or SL drive for a grind stomp. The BB has a wider EQ to my ears and can gain up if needed or be milder if desired. The SL is thick from the word go. Both are by Xotic and can be found at reasonable prices on the used market. I've found myself running the amp on the verge of crunch and using the guitar volume and EP boost for leads.

I plan on using this amp in EVERY way, straight in and cranked, with/without the Brake Lite, with pedals, pedals and BL....
But I want ONE dirt pedal on the mini board I'm gonna build. These days, along with craft beer, are the Golden Age of effects pedals. There's SO many out there! I'm sure I could get an OCD and be happy, but I haven't played a Z28 for a few years and figure there may be a better for me and the amp o e out there.

I'm using my Z-28 as a clean platform recently and I tried A LOT of dirt pedals before finding the best for my use. Running the amp dirty sounds absolutely awesome with this amp, I prefer it clean just for practical use. The pedals I like better are the Hudson Broadcast and the Bondi Sick As.

EQD Talons is versatile and has its own sound.

Might also suggest J-Drive from Diamond - two boxes in one - drive and boost
cheers always,

Man I have my eyes on that broadcast cuz of that pedal show! Sounds good with the z-28??? I've been happy with my OCD and Timmy. I also use my z28 as a clean pedal platform. Always fun letting it rip too!

I'm usually playing a Les Paul and my favorite is the Xotic AC Comp.
It has more gain than you would expect and the comp setting smoothes things out.

Another vote here for the Xotic BB Preamp as that is the pedal I have had for a long time now, including when I had a Z-28. I thought the BB sounded great with the 28, especially with my Les Paul.

I have one on my OTHER BOARD, may try it with the Z28. How do/did you set the amp and the BB? For strats and teles.

I had the Z-28 a number of years ago, so don't really remember exact configurations at that time, but they were probably like I set most of my amps and pedals. The BB I generally run fairly flat on the EQ, with slightly more bass, with the overdrive set higher at something like 2 - 3 O'Clock. The amp was most likely on the cleaner side for a cleaner tone, more headroom, where I use pedals for overdrive and distortion. I did try different settings with the amp's EQ of course, pushing the bass and treble above noon for more overdrive and sweet sparkling tones. As I mentioned, I particularly noticed the great tone I was getting with the combo and my LP. Big sweet overdrive and a very nice, tight, low end. It really rocked. The settings I described above would have been used with my tele as well, again producing great tones. Didn't have a strat.

Thx. I just played the BB and the Z28 and it is a good sounding combo. BB was set: T at noon, B at 3o'clock, gain maxed. Amp was 11-930-10, with the BL at 2 clicks, with a strat.

I played a gig last night with my Timmy stacked with or without my Seafoam Lowtide, as well as a J Rockett Animal, using a 1x12 can loaded with a G12h. I recieved a lot of favorable compliments re the OD tones as well as the straight clean tone. I prefer remarks from people 10 to 20 feet away rather than what I am hearing 4 feet away from my rig.

Well... I'm no longer allowed to have amps in the bedroom... So in the dining room resides my Z28 with a Lovepedal Roadhouse Eternity with which I set the table.
Buen provecho!

So, I bought an OCD copy, the Joyo Ultimate Drive. It's very close to the OCD, but sounds more like a distortion than the medium+ gain overdrive i was looking for. So i put it on the big board for the 66 Super Reverb and put the BB Preamp on the little Z28 board. Settings are V=unity, Gain=4 oclock, T=1 oclock, B=2 oclock. Amp at 1030-930-1030, Brake Lite at 2. VERY good tone, with a Fat Boost3 going into the BB for leads. Think it'll stay!

Another fun pedal is the Thorpyfx warthog. Kicked an ocd and bogner blue off my board.
