Bought a used Air Brake today. Bedroom knob wasn't sweeping cleanly so I popped the back off and found that the sweeper (for want of a better name) was fouling (shorting I guess) against one of the fasteners. Just sharing this pic in case it turns out to be of use to other members. Edit: Thanks for the feedback in this thread. I've corrected the 'tinkering' by the last owner and it's back the way it was when it left the factory.

Cool you were able to sort it. That's a rheostat that was shorting , the piece that rotates is called a wiper or slider. Thanks for sharing!

Molly, either you bought that used or you adjusted your sliders and caused the issue. I can plainly see marks on the variable resistor that shows the original placement, then the 2nd and 3rd sliders were adjusted to the right which placed the 3rd slider screw over the rheostat . Easy fix, glad you fixed it.

I had noticed two different screws used for the sliders - I assumed someone had been in making their own "adjustments".

molly, I don't see the Airbrake manual on the Dr Z website, although it used to be there. I have a pdf. Send me a PM with your email address if you'd like a copy.

One of the "skills" a person develops from doing repair work is spotting the evidence of some of the shoddy workmanship of people who shouldn't be tinkering inside their equipment. Also I spend a fair amount of time reversing mods. I wonder how much of that the guys at the Z-shop see when folks send in used amps to be serviced. Doc spotted that issue right off.

Indeed though I've since read the manual and it does encourage owners to move the contacts. As such, it might be prudent to use shorter screws.
