Any suggestions appreciated.

Jerry....why are you wanting to make a change? My suggestion is to stick with the tubes that Doc designed the amp around. I bought a spare tube set for my Wreck and went with the stock ones (tested when they arrived to make sure they weren't DOA)!

For the Z-Wreck, if I had to choose between Mullard and Amperex only, it would be AMPEREX Bugle Boys all the way....But as I stated previously, I go with Doc Z, my Wreck has the originals Doc recommended....KILLER!

Amperex are great for Vox style tones. I love the few I have. But in all honesty, I have A/B'ed them and the stock Tung Sol in my Z-Wreck, and kept the Tung Sols. They are as good as anything NOS in a lot of amps. Dr.'s advice, always go with the stock set.

This would be the first amp I own like that. I have some old RCA and one Mullard I can try but I won't be spending money on any others with this info. Thanks, for the feedback.

Well, it's not so much that NOS doesn't make a difference... But, DRZ himself has said many times recently that all the NOS 12AX7's that are left are just "stems and seeds;" all the good ones have been picked through and taken already, I guess. Granted, I don't think (of course, I could be wrong) that necessarily applies to NOS 12AT7's and the lesser-gain 9-pin preamp tubes down the line--they don't seem to be as popularly used and/or rabidly consumed as, say, 12AX7's for V1 positions, and NOS ones are probably still superior to current-production. So I think what frankie is alluding to is a manifestation of the fact that real good NOS 12AX7's aren't really even available anymore(?).

I beg to differ. I think the statement that ALL available NOS 12AX7's are "stems and seeds" is a stretch. I bought a bunch of NOS tubes starting back around 1995 up until 10 years ago. All tested strong and I've still got several of them in my stash. My intent was to have enough to last me the rest of my playing days. I don't play out much anymore so there they sit. I can't be the only one who has done that. So my point is, they ARE out there, just not in any great quantity. I've also bought some ANOS tubes that I'm perfectly happy with.
About 10 years ago I happened upon a find. I was in my veterinarians office one day and I noticed behind the counter he had an old Bogen paging system, obviously from the tube era. I asked him about it and he said he hadn't used it for years and it wasn't even still hooked up. He said he had 2 spare tubes I could have since I was a long time customer. They were new 12AX7's. They were labeled "Bogen Made In USA" I have no idea who the manufacturer was.
This stuff is out there. I just wouldn't trust Ebay sources.
