I am thinking of investing in some NOS pre's for my Wreck.
Any suggestions? Amperex or Mullard? V1 and V2, or just V1?
All suggestions appreciated.

I'm a big proponent of NOS tubes for preamps and rectifiers. However, I believe Dr Z was particularly careful when selecting the tubes for that amp and you should stay with the preamp tubes that are stock.

If you feel you must change tubes, I'd suggest you might want to call the guys at The Tube Store (they are the source Doc recommends on the tube section of his web-site).

Good tubes sound good, bad tubes don't. There are some characteristic tendencies and Amperex and Mullard are similar flavors. Ideally, find some that test well from several factories that would reveal what you would like in each tube the electrical tests don't tell what the tube emphasizes.

I have always swapped pre's in my amps to get warmer tones.
Any Marshall I have ever owned liked the NOS Mullard 12AX7's.
I hear the Trainwrecks are partial to Amperex.
Maybe I should just leave well enough alone with the Z?
I can't imagine you guys have not tried different pre's in the Z?

It'll happen soon, but it sounds great now. I even have a small stock. I haven't swapped them in my other recent boutique amps, either. As much as I like some tubes and some tube companies, if it sounds good how it is, sometimes I'd just prefer to play it than to spend time rolling this tube, then that one, etc.

I personally love the Amperex 12AX7. I also like the Mullard version, tho IMHO, it is a tad darker than the Amperex (that's prolly why you like 'em in yer Marshalls)..... Interestingly, despite the stockpile of NOS glass I've been hoarding for my old vintage Fender amps for the last 40 years, most of my Z's have Doc's recommended tubes in them....He's got pretty good ears. Still, it's fun to experiment.....Kudos on snagging those vintage 12ax's....they're awesome...
