Hi, guys. Saw a Maz 18 for sale that says it has the reverb mod AND master volume mod done by Dr Z. Would this be a setup like is used on the Z Lux? Any opinions as to the benefit and/or drawbacks on a Maz 18? Seller claims overall volume remains the same when turning up the gain (volume) ...does that sound right? Thanks!

I've never seen a MAZ 18 that didn't have a Master. The only mod that I know of that Z does for that amp is the tone stack bypass for older models.

To my knowledge, there is no MV or reverb "mod" to these amps.
Seller sounds shifty....proceed with caution.

yes there are MV and reverb mods on these amps. Just look up Dr Z AMA - MAZ series mods and upgrades.

If I recall right, the reverb mod makes the reverb less subtle - like the present reverb set-up - definitely closer to the Z-Lux sound.

Does anyone know what year of production began shipping the latest update to the Maz 18, and if it affects the NR version?

What type of gear are you playing with?? Thank you! Recently I got 2015 MAZ18 Jr. It was purchased from the shop and it came with JJ EL84's. Great amp, but I'm thinking about swapping the tubes for the Russian 6N14N. I also have some old Mullards, but haven't tried them in the MAZ yet. I also gig with 65 Amps Lil' Elvis - but MAZ and Lil' ELvis, although they both have EL84's in the power section, are two different amps. Do you have any experience with the mods (reverb and MV)?

I can’t speak for the mods, mine is an older model, but those Russian 6N14N’s sure sound good.

The 6N14N Russian tubes sound great in the Maz. I didn't have the reverb mod done on my amp (I like the subtle character of it the way it is) but then I have a Z-Lux and EZG 50 when I feel the need to surf.

yes there are MV and reverb mods on these amps. Just look up Dr Z AMA - MAZ series mods and upgrades. Given that the master volume update on the 2015 and later Maz amps in fact turns the master into a PPIMV I'm surprised that there has not been more notice taken of these changes. The Doc himself even says that in some circumstances the new PPIMV works "as well as or better than an attenuator". This alone seems like a pretty big deal but throw in the enhanced reverb circuit and the new buffered loop and it seems like a pretty big deal.

Anyone know when that PPIMV update was done? My Maz Jr is dated 6/15. It sounds great as it is, but now I'm curious! It probably hasn't got the latest reverb mod, as the reverb is quite subtle.

Oh well, thanks fasteddie, but I emailed Don and mine does not have the mods after all. Sounds great anyway, no worries!

I got the impression from the video that all 2015s had the mods, and you would think especially one made in June of 2015. But don't feel bad-I bought one "new" from Humbucker late enough in 2015 that it should have had the mods and they shipped me one made early in 2014. At the time I wasn't aware of the mods and didn't know any better, so I guess you live and learn. I always ask the mfg. date now. Like you say though, they all sound great!

As you say, it does sound great And the mods, is it correct that they could be done by Dr.Z only or is there anyone who repairs/mods Dr.Z amps in Europe?

If you're in the UK you could try Essex Amp Repairs, I think they're the only authorized Z repairer in the UK.
