So I have a V30 that I want to try in a Z112 cab but it's 16 ohm. I want to see what it really sounds like with my Therapy.
I've been running an 8 ohm Creamback 65 and have really been pleased with it. It's just that all the talk about Docs choice being a V30 with this amp makes me want pull it out of my 212 and put it in the 112 to get a real comparison.
Here are my two questions; is there a sonic difference between 8 and 16 ohm speakers? Can I just save the work and leave the V30 in the 212 cab and run it by itself to get its true potential? As of now that's what I'm doing and it has a nasely hollow sound. Thanks!

I doubt that there will be an audible difference between the 8 and 16 ohm versions; at least I have never heard it.. Regarding the 2x12 with one speaker installed, you aren't going to get a fair representation of the V30 or any other speaker when it's installed in a cab with an empty 12" hole next to it, or for that matter, with a speaker installed but disconnected. The enclosure makes a BIG difference in the response of any speaker. The nasally hollow sound is because the low frequencies are cancelling themselves out when the wave comes out of the empty speaker hole and encounters a wave of opposite polarity at the speaker. As the cone moves forward it creates a low pressure in the cab which equalizes itself by pulling the outside air in. That air contains the positive pressure wave generated by the forward moving cone and cancels itself out. I'd definitely put it in the enclosure that it's going to be used in, and try it. It takes me a total of ten minutes to change speakers in a guitar amp. Even if you have to pull the chassis, it is a fast job. The only thing I hate is getting down on the floor and wrenching my back...herniated discs are no fun.
PS: You'll love the V30 with the Therapy. I just changed my 1x12 to a V30 last week and it's terrific. Much more definition and the Therapy benefits from the midrange spike that so many of us (myself included) who hated the V30 with other amps. I dig mine open back too, fwiw.

^^ Thanks Dave! That's a very well explained answer! I think I'm gonna give it a try just to see what happens. I'll be sure to put electrical tape over the 8 ohm and 4 ohm inputs on my Therapy just to be safe!

Made the switch and it's so hard to decide because both the Creamback and the V30 sound really great. I think I'm gonna stick with the smoothness of the Creamback for now.
As far as the V30 goes, I can see why folks like it with the Therapy. It's very clear and defined. Maybe I'll try it in the band mix before I truly decide.
This is what I do when I get an itch for another Z, so I'll just sign off for now.
