So you know that red Monza head you wanted to buy? Well I bought it! Yay me!
After searching around for about a year (and trying to talk myself out of it during that time) I finally found the right one to buy. I'd like to thank Z Talk member captainron for such a great transaction. Great guy to talk to and loves his Z's! A definite Z Brother indeed.
Scouring the threads and trying to soak up as much information about speakers/cabinets as I can. I'm ready to buy a cabinet, but like everyone else, am stuck on deciding which speaker. So far I've only been able to try:
1) a Celestion V30 1x12 in a speaker cabinet (closed & open back) that I borrowed from my fellow guitar mate in the band. I didn't really like what I was hearing and feeling.
2) Using my Maz 1x12 with the G12H "Anniversary" speaker as a cabinet. Honestly when I tried it the first night at home I was seriously thinking I made a mistake in buying the Monza. Then I remembered that I felt the same way when I brought the Maz home (in the picture below the Monza). It wasn't until I took them out and fiddled with it -- and played in the band environment -- that I was hooked (the MAZ years ago and the Monza days ago). It turns out I actually really like the cleaned up tone (with GV) and the down and dirty/raunchiness when using the Maz as a speaker cabinet for the Monza, with the speaker mentioned above. The only real thing I notice is that sometimes even with the tone knob dimed all the way to the right, it seemed like it needed more highs (not quite the wet blanket thing, but not nearly as bright was when using the Maz combo). But that wasn't all the time (probably a number of factors).
Anyway, I don't want to continue using the Maz as a speaker cabinet and want to get a dedicated cabinet. I'm wondering if anyone has insight on whether one of the Dr Z convertible cabinets (the red ones of course, because they sound different), with the same G12H speakers in it, will it behave the same/similar way as I'm getting with the Maz as a cabinet for the Monza. My head is spinning with all the different choices and it makes it hard to decide. I was just watching a video of Pete Thorn talking about the Scumback speakers. When he was asked by them to try out their speakers, he decided that he liked the first one he tried so much that he didn't want to hear anything else because it would make things complicated. He stuck with it. I'm thinking of taking this approach.
Bottom line: I like the sound of the speaker in my Maz combo, and I like the sound of the speaker using the Maz as a cabinet with the Monza. The big question is will I like it with a Z convertible cabinet as well??? Good luck answering that one!
