Hello fellow Z maniacs,
Since sometimes, when band duties are on a break, I am only practicing scales, doing "fretboard aerobics", etc, but I still want to enjoy my nice Z amps, I figured it made "sense" saving the NOS Russian stock tubes for later and replace them with affordable RI Mullards (reissue, yes, I know it is heresy). AKA I just wanted to try them, what the heck. Full set for preamp and power tubes.
Result: lost the "high fi" tone and some (5-10%) definition, some punch and bass, and some "fullness" to the tone. But... the Mullards sound really sweet and if you hadn't heard the original tubes, I would have no complaints. They are a little bit brighter as well. I play some PRS guitars on top of a 335 and a Strat. PRS's tend to have a lot of bass, and while the Mullards take good care of that, they tame the bass a bit, which I like. Still, well defined, "round/clear" sounding bass notes. I can recommend them for a similar experiment (replacing expensive NOS tubes with some current issue ones for burning hours of practice) gladly.
Still, when duty calls, I'll place the NOS back into the Wreck.
PS: Reissue Mullards in a Ghia do work pretty good too. Nice and crispy, not shrill. All around good tone, less ballsy then JJ's, but sweeter breakup.
Enjoy!
