It"s time for a change, I've had a deluxe reverb reissue for a couple years and would like to try a Maz 18. I play at home 90% of the time, with the volume set between 4-6 plugged into the lower input. this right where the amp is starting to open up. I have read the Maz 18 is a loud amp, I was hoping I could play the Maz at the same volume (edge of break up). any suggestion are welcome.

Having owned Maz 18's for 15 years and recently acquired a Cure I'd say that the Cure with it's Level control would be a much more fun home amp. Read up on the Cure.

Yeah, Maz on the edge of breakup is LOUD! Unless you have a brake lite to help bring it into reason...it's a much louder amp than the Fender.

Not even pretending to know the technical details, but having read here that the Cure and Maz 18 share some of the same circuits, I wonder if the Maz can be retrofitted with a level control like the Cure has.
Any wisdom, guys?

Any wisdom, guys? As I understand it the Level control is a unique design component of the Cure.

Frank and Eric have steered you right on the Cure. You won't do better, no need to try.
Well, maybe you could look at a Maz 8 if you love the Maz sound, but if you're strictly playing at home the Cure will give up the goods at a much lower volume. No Brakelite needed. It's all about that level control, which I personally think should go down in the all-time amp inventor's Hall of Fame.

I love my Maz 8 for home playing. But, like everyone else, that new level control on the Cure has me wondering. Hmmm.

2 different amps maz 8 and cure...nice to have both...18 is doable...considering room...but vol is up there...

thanks for all the advice, I was looking at the Cure but wanted to try El 84 style amp. I have read an attenuator is advised for home playing with the Maz 18, but I was hoping I would not need one

Level control on the Cure is brilliant; no attenuator needed. You can play at home, then go out and play a club gig.

I have a Maz jr that I "try" to practice with at home. I'm using a Weber miniMass to attenuate the amp, which works ok, but a lot of the life and character of the amp gets lost. Part of the problem is using the settings I would normally use for a gig (where the amp sounds totally fab). I have kinda come up with the at-home-low-vol-low-master-increased-brights setting, that when used with some attenuation, sounds ok with pedals, but edge of breakup is a bit hit and miss....

Maz 18 with a BL would give you the option of home play (though even on 4 it's still loud enough that I need earplugs), as well as kick arse sound if you ever get a live gig. Plus the BL works great with other amps too. For the price, it's a great investment.

I was playing my Maz 18NR at home this afternoon with the brakelite on 4 (max). It was still really loud. It's a brilliant guitar amp but it's more at home onstage than in home.

The Therapy has a wonderful tone and a fantastic Master Volume.
It's worth considering.

Another Cure and/or Maz8 w/Brakelite endorsement here.

To reaffirm what everyone else has said, the Maz is LOUD. When I'm playing at home, the master never breaks past 3 out of 10

The Maz 8 is loud enough that I use it for smaller gigs with the 20 piece Big Band I play in. It has no problem getting over a full trumpet section, 5 saxes, 3 trombones, keys, drums and vocalists. It's an amazing "little" amp. I take my Maz 18 sometimes to outdoor gigs and it has no problem at all. I used it last summer at an outdoor amphitheater and even outside it was a lot of amp.

Yup - I'd go so far as to say an airbrake would be a good choice with the option of the bedroom setting. Heck, I attenuate my mini Z at home, let alone my maz 18nr
