Is it normal for the stand alone to become very hot after using it? I did a gig yesterday with my route 66 and used the stand alone. After 3 hours when we were tearing down it was hot as hell. What causes the intense heat?

What causes the intense heat? It's normal. The basic design of the attenuator is that it takes the energy it's absorbing and dissipates it as heat. The harder you are running the amp the hotter the attenuator will get. As well, if it's getting really hot you may be running at the edge of the rating for the unit/amp combo. Perhaps a full scale Airbrake would work better (not as hot).
