Hey Guys,
I'm in the market for a 2x10 speaker cabinet. I always like mixing speakers. I read that some people like the Celestion Greenback 10's mixed with the Gold Alnico 10's. Has anyone tried this combination?
How about the Dr Z 10" with the Alnico Gold 10"?
Thanks ~ Roger

Check out the WGS 10" speakers.
I have a 2x12 cabinet with a WGS ET65 and a WGS G12c/s; they have both of these in 10" versions, the ET10 and the G10c/s, I think.
My 2x12 cabinet is very balanced (I use it with my KT45 and Ghia Anni); I would think that some combination of WGS speakers would work for you, plus they will speak to you about your needs - and all of their stuff is pretty reasonably priced.

Mismatched speakers are great. Experimentation worth while. Look for similar sensitivity ratings if you are using them live and want to hear both.

I have 2 Golds and 2 Greenbacks in a Boogie Lonestar 4x10. They aren't broken in yet, but it was love at first sound. Golds & Greenbacks are within 3 db of sensitivity of each other which is the max difference suggested by Celestion when mixing speakers. (pretty sure I read that here in the Speakers thread.)
I’m loving that cab with my Maz 18 JR NR, but it’s pretty cool with my Z 28 as well.
Have to admit that part of the reason I mixed Golds and Greenbacks was the price of 4 Golds vs. the price of two of each. I’d read about others mixing the two and I went for it. No complaints.
Oh, and I’m still looking for a Z 2x10 as well. The 4x10 is great but a bit big and heavy. I got it mildly used for a price I could not resist.

In my Avatar 2X10 are exactly that...one 10" Greenback and one 10" Gold. I tried several combinations and that one sounded the best to me with my Remedy.

I swopped out the speakers in my silverface Vibrolux to preserve them and put in Jupiter 10 SC ( small ceramic)and 10 LC (large ceramic) combination as recommended . They are very nice together and also built by WGS for Jupiter. I have since swopped one out for a eminence legend 1028 alnico and the LC /1028 combination sounded the best to me with the alnico adding a bit more sparkle and chime when driven hard. I have also ran my Maz 18 through these two speakers and it sounded very nice too. I have also use a gold with a greenback (both 12") in a blues breaker cab with no ill effect from the difference in db rating.

Look for similar sensitivity ratings if you are using them live and want to hear both. exactly. If the sensitivity ratings aren't similar, one speaker will drown out the other. A 10" gold is rated at 98db. The 10" greenback is 95db.....a big 3db difference. 3db may not seem like much, but in the world of speakers, that's a significant difference. The gold will drown out the greenback. the gold by itself is a great speaker. And be careful/cautious of speaker db ratings from different companies. They can vary in the way they measure them. So a 100db speaker from one company can be louder/quieter than a 100db speaker from another company.

That's why I was thinking maybe the Dr Z 10" at 97db may work well with the Celestion Gold 10" at 98db. I might try it out. I haven't had a chance to try out one of Doc's speakers.

I built a 2x10 baffle for my DRRI and have WGS ET10 and 10c/s (the smooth cone version) mounted. Nice combination. Good balance and well behaved sonically. If you are looking to peel off wallpaper with the highs, this isn't the combo, but overall they work well together and sound big in that amp.
