Haven't seen anything on this but always have loved the 5Y3 in amps, like my Ghia and Tweed Deluxe. Will it work in a Cure?

Hey thank you sir! Will give it a whirl for fun. Just have to say, thanks for putting out the Cure--what an absolutely fantastic amp and tool for every guitar player! It's a home run, and a perfect compliment to my Carmen Ghia.

I wonder--would this push it into the "tweed deluxe" direction? I myself have never seen or played a Cure, so I might be way off just bay asking, but... well, I had to ask (you know, for a friend!).

I plan to try it today so I'll report back, but my guess is yes it will probably put a bit of that feel in there. The Cure just has such a better feel and behavior to me than many of those classic American amps, so my plan is to see how that is effected if much at all. For example the bass doesn't fall apart, and there is great string-to-string separation. I'm guessing the 5Y3 may soften the punch and snap a bit.

I like how the Cure is a bit looser than my Ghia, Monza, or Therapy .... but still has the string separation. Sometimes when you want to get to Neil Young style overdriven amp sounds it's nice to have to low end flub out. 5Y3 might get some more squish. I'm gonna look around and see if I have one laying around.

I tried an old RCA 5Y3 and felt like the volume drop was not significant enough to use over a GZ34. Not to say that it may not work for you but there was a substantial loss of definition and clarity. I'm a big fan of 5Y3's but it wasn't a good fit for this amp IMO. I love tinkering but I feel like the doc really has this amp voiced well for the stock speaker and glass that it comes with.
That said, Doc can it safely run 6L6's

We can "remedy" that Mark! Yup, hope to fix that "never seen or played a Cure" thing real soon! I'm staring at August 26th on my calendar...
