I have been looking for a new amp for pub & small club gigs, current amp just not having enough punch or power. While browsing the used selection online I saw a Dr. Z Therapy at my local Guitar Center for $999. I had never played a Dr. Z before and I always wanted to check them out after hearing so much about them. So I took it for a test drive and after looking up what they seem to go for online (1799 new/ 1399-ish used?) I felt like I had to grab it! I'm still putting it through it's paces but I am digging it so far. Can any one familiar with this amp let me know how it compares to other Dr. Z's? $999 is a good price for one of these right? The amp looks & sounds mint. Amp seems plenty loud but, but we will see how it does with the full band this weekend. Sorry for the crappy picture didn't have time for a real camera.

Hey.. welcome to the Dr Z family. I'm not a therapy owner, but looking at what they're going for on Reverb, looks like you got if about $300 or $400 less than current asking price for a used one. I'd say you scored. Congrats.

Welcome to the best kept secret on the web. Great guys here, no BS, and congrats on your Therapy. It's a great amp and sounds fab with my Z 1x12 cab, open back, with a Z12 driver. Doc recommends a a Celestion V30 with this amp, and it works well too.

Thanks for the warm welcome!
Im leaning towards saving up for a matching z best cab. But it will probably be a bit before I can justify spending the money on it. For now I'm going to use some of the cabs I have around. It surprisingly sounds really good through the cab in the picture which is loaded with 4 x 8in Celestions.

You got a great deal. Congrats, love my Therapy!
On the cab. If you are sold on a 2x12 I would take a long look at the new Z 2x12 backline cab. Z Best is a great cab, had one for years. But my .02 would be the backline.

Yes, you got a great price. Plus the Salt and Pepper cloth grill is a upgrade.
One of the most warm & smooth Z amps.
Enjoy!

I was drawn to the z best because of the ability to stand it on its side taking up less space on stage, a few of the venues we play at have some tiny stages. It's funny I almost pulled the trigger about 6 months ago a z best cab I saw on CL. Now I'm kinda kicking myself as they wouldnof made a matching stack.

The amp looks & sounds mint. Amp seems plenty loud but, but we will see how it does with the full band this weekend. Sorry for the crappy picture didn't have time for a real camera. I will make reference specifically to the question of how the Therapy compares to other Z's. - It can be a really clean amp but there are cleaner Z's available - I think that the Therapy has the very best master volume of all Z's. - it very well could be the most usable amp from the bedroom to the stage in front of a packed house. This goes back to he master volume thing. - in my opinion the Therapy has the sweetest mid control with a certain bell like chime that I've never heard in other Z's. This can't be fully appreciated without playing with a band and getting the amp into the mix. I now ser my mid knob all the way up. I'm not gonna get too in to tone settings as you will find out what you like (with a band, not alone), but don't be scared to crank those mids. So congrats and that was a great price to pay for the Therapy. I sure as heck won't sell mine but if I did I would ask much more than what you paid.

The Therapy was paired with a Celestion V30 by Dr Z as the speaker of his preference with it. One thing with Z amps is a speaker change can be the difference between love and hate. So if you feel close but not quite there don't worry... just start saving for a speaker binge until you find the one.
For me the Therapy was an amp that had MORE of everything than I needed. It has the ability to really focus on BASS MIDDLE or TREBLE....with all the EQ knobs around 9 O'clock I felt like the amp was 'neutral' sounding...you can scoop the mids from there a bit and have a pretty normal, but way better, Fender kinda a feel going. The EQ is really sensitive, and allows for a lot of knob tweaking. Sometimes I wouldn't use ANY Treble. Just lots of BASS and mids to taste.
Try turning all the EQ to off and use one at a time to hear its full sweep. Sometimes I only used Mids. What I am saying is the Therapy was one of the most amazing amps at getting different sounds with...I had mine for a couple years and never felt I ran out of sounds. After I really got use to the EQ sweep, I could almost make that amp sound like any other amp I wanted to buy.
The master volume is fantastic but I do think the amp sounds best with the MV around 1-2 O'clock...the amp really opens up. With the Volume low and the Master high you'll have spanky cleans...Volume high with Master back down, unless you are in a loud band...really loud, ....anyway MV lower with V high for dirt. Add Bass for darkness, not just low end but warmth. Mids for Marshall esk sounds...Treble for Fender esk feel.
A great amp. You might like a Brake Lite so you can keep the Master up and not blow your ears out. But anyhow...WELCOME!
Great price and great amp!

Thanks everyone for the tips! I am extremely excited to try the amp out with the band at practice tomorrow so I can tweak the eq more. But currently I have been running the amp with lows at 9, mids at 1, treble at 2, and vol at 11. The master is great with the ability to play bed room levels but seems to breath more life into the amp when it's up around noon at least. This has been giving me a really nice clean that breaks up when I dig in with single coils and crunch with humbuckers. It also loves a tube screamer in front of it for Texas blues tones. One thing I noticed about the mid control is that with the mids turned up it really makes my delay pedal pop. Almost as if I turned the mix up on it. If I turn the mids down the delay almost disappears. I think this shows how powerful the eq is and once I find where I like everything I will just have to tweak the delay accordingly.

As already mentioned, you got it for a great price! Nice! The Therapy is my favorite amp. I have a Maz 18NR and a Ghia...both are great, but the Therapy is my favorite (at least for now).

The Z Best is a pretty 'long throw' cabinet. Not sure you'll get the best out of it on small stages.

Convertible aspect mainly. The Z Best is a pretty 'long throw' cabinet. Not sure you'll get the best out of it on small stages. Hmmm... I wonder how long it has to be to be long throw. We play a range of places. Largest being a club that holds about 400 people. I'll have to look into that.

I read up on long throw cabs and I think you're suggestion was right. Seems long throw would not spread the sound well. Thanks for the heads up!
