Hi,
Just to be clear, I play mostly country and classic rock stuff with a '75 Telecaster or Travis picking/Chet Atkins stuff with a 6122 Country Gentleman.
I always preferred a clean-ish british voiced amp set on the verge of breakup for the country stuff and and an american voiced amp set pristine clean for the Travis picking stuff. It's a simple and effective setup for my needs.
I've been looking for a good/versatile/simple to use british voiced amp for a while and the Carmen Ghia ended my research pretty quickly. I sold my AC15C1 and other amps and I've been really really happy since then. Beautiful amp.
I've been using a 65 (blackface) Princeton Reverb Reissue for the clean stuff with decent results for a while but I think I'm gonna sell it and get something better. Too much knobs and stuff I don't need, plus the tone controls are not very responsive IMHO. Clean headroom is not that much on the Hi input (around "6" it starts to go into breakup with single coils) and I don't like the tone on the Lo input.
I started looking for american voiced amps with good clean headroom, all tube, 18 to 22W, no master volume, no FX loop, no trem and/or verb and other ****. I'm not looking for something as clean as a JC-120 or a Twin of course, just an amp with very good clean headroom that can be also pushed into breakup if needed, and breakups nicely. I hate the bassy/farty breakup of my Princeton, so I use it clean with dirt pedals (and swapped tons of them because some didn't sound good at all).
I've done some research in the Dr. Z website and the Z-28 seems a pretty obvious if not the only choice for my needs. I just wanted to ask you a couple of things:
- Is that capable of those Fender classic cleans?
- How about clean headroom with single coils and Filtertrons? Can I push it up to noon and keep it pristine clean? My Carmen Ghia starts to go into breakup around 9 o'clock on the volume. It's a completely different amp, but it's my only Z reference at the moment.
- What about tone controls and gain? It's still a mistery to me for this amp. The tone knob on my CG adds a little bit of grit past 3 o'clock just because it pumps up the bottom end.
- I have a custom 1x10 cab with a Celestion Gold G10. I read on the forum that the Z-28 loves this speaker. How about a 12'' Eminence Cannabis Rex? It's a common speaker for Carmen Ghia users because it helps to tame highs (which can be very fizzy with the CG) but I don't know how it sounds with the Z28. If it's not a good choice, I'll try to buy a speaker which both the amps love.
Thanks for your help!
