"Z-Wreck" and "LOUD" seem to be two words you find close together in any description of the Wreck. It is one of the reasons I resisted it, (the other, of course, being the price tag). I think the universal opinion is that Wreck is too loud for at home use without an attenuator of some kind holding it back. But I need an amp for live shows.
My question was: Is it too loud to GIG? Well I finally pulled the trigger and picked up a Z-Wreck head and slapped a Gold in my Dr. Z 112 convo cab and had my first gig with it this weekend.
I was really excited about this gig, because it was a large hall with a big stage. At least that is what it looked like from the pictures. Then I took a look at the floor plan and realized this place was smaller than my house! It was 1100 sq feet with a raised 12x10 stage bringing the total room to just over 1200 sq'. THAT is a really small room for us. At first I was disappointment because I wasn't going to be able to open the Wreck up, but then it dawned on me that this was THE perfect test. If it wasn't too loud for this room, it wouldn't be too loud for ANY room we ever play.
So, what was the verdict:
It was NOT too loud. Not even close.
I did use a Brake Lite, and set it on 2 clicks, and when the band got really loud, I dropped it down to one click for some lead work, and on one one song, I clicked it down to bypass mode. I ran it most of the night in Comfort, and one set I ran it on Speed, and had the volume around 10:30. At times, the Therapy on the other side of the stage seemed WAY louder than the Wreck. I say "seemed" because the Therapy user would argue that point and he may be right! We are a louder band, so take that into consideration. And I did have my Earaser ear plugs in most of the night. But the Wreck wasn't too loud in a 1200 sq' foot room with hardwood floors and tall ceilings. The crowd wasn't running for the doors and nobody every complained about the band or the Wreck being too loud.
So if you are like me, and are wondering if the Wreck is too loud to gig and you play in a louder type band, and you run it before noon, my advice is that it isn't too loud. IF you have a Brake Lite for those smaller rooms
It was a lot of fun to play and I didn't use a dirt pedal all night and I hardly used my Clean boost at all. Everything others have said about the amp is true and I don't have anything to add in that regard. It is a great amp.
Now my new dilemma: Do I sell the Remedy or sell the Z-lux or keep both or sell both? The problems we create for ourselves!
